In addition to giving more people the opportunity to hear his speech, it may also diminish the effectiveness of any disruptors/booers who Obama hopes will be drowned out by tens of thousands of more enthusiastic supporters. The media will most likely look for any signs of discontent/division among democrats during his speech and this venue may be a way to help combat that. (In the most extreme case, If anyone tried to head onto the field, they'd probably be stopped in their tracts long before they got close to obama
