KO hit on some things that looked like they came directly from here, KOS (I know he posts there occasionally), HuffPo and others.

One thing that stood out was the Halliburton/KBR electrocutions and the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS)assessment of the horrible oil spills following Hurricane Katrina.

5. Minerals Management Service
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 07:49 PM by NYC_SKP
Part of the Dept. of Interior.

Manages the mineral resources of the Outer Continental Shelf and collects, verifies, and distributes mineral revenues from Federal and Native American lands.

Some of them are really nice people!

http://www.mms.gov/

Among their more enlightened efforts of late are plans to offer leases to alternative energy projects, wind, tide, current.

There are federal agencies that manage to do some good work despite their current administration. Emphasis on the word "some"

10. Federal Agencies, a favorite topic.
All of these, the FDA, FCC, USDA, etc. have historically had the mission of balancing the public good with what promotes the economy.

For example, many don't realize that the USPTO, US patent and trademark office, has the mission not only of protecting intellectual property, but also of distributing that very material. A patent is an agreement to protect your idea if you promise to divulge it for the benefit of future development and thus the economy.

The trouble is that over the years all the agencies seem to have forgotten the "public good" part.

Imagine that!

And forgive me if you've heard all this before...

11. You're right -- we seem to have forgotten that the agencies are there
FOR us. I blame Bush.

And I've no doubt that there are some really good people in ALL the agencies - and some of them must be heartbroken at what they see happening.

6. They do. I remember a great panning shot of CNN's newsroom...
...during the primaries, and one commentator (they all had laptops) had DU's distinct design up on her laptop screen.
