an asshole was when he "set-up" General Wes Clark during the Iowa Primaries and cost him a lot of Vet support in New Hampshire and thereafter. Dole was on CNN (again) commentating during the Iowa results on Larry King during an interview with Clark who had not contested Iowa. Dole made a comment to Clark that in politics (based on Kerry's win of that evening) Clark was now the lieutenant and Kerry was the General (the worst comment you can make in the military is to demote a fellow officer's rank). Wes Clark corrected Dole and said...."I am the General and Kerry was a lieutenant. We were both Lieutenants during the Vietnam war, but I chose to remain in and Kerry chose another path".
The irony of the whole exchange, of course, was that Clark had not even contested Iowa....and therefore a Kerry win did not demote him in politics or otherwise.....as Clark had not lost (since he had not ran in Iowa). The media took off running with the "I am the General and Kerry was the Lieutenant " quote and it was reported widely (as Dole's comments against Kerry are now) throughout the National Press. That quote hurt the General badly and I believe helped him lose a lot of points in NH (he came in third)...with those points going to Kerry. Of course, like any good politician, John Kerry used Clark's comments to his advantage.
What does this have to do with what's going on now? General Clark was the RNC's worst nightmare and the last person they wanted to run against Bush. He was seriously wounded 4 times in Vietnam, was in the hospital for three months (received 2 Purple hearts, a Silver and a Bronze for his actions), and returned into the Armed Forces after learning to walk and use his hand again. He later negotiated a peace (Bosnia Dayton Peace Accords), planned, led and won a war without any U.S. Casualties (Kosovo), while leading a 19 country coalition (as NATO SACEUR) all the while fighting the Republican led Clinton Pentagon who did not want Clinton to be sucessfull in Kosovo.
End point is Dole is a partisan attack dog who has successfully built up a partisan reputation. He is one of KKKarl Rove's most effective weapons, as was proven such during the primaries to ensure that "worst nightmare" would not be the nominee....and now.
