If a quote is posted in an OP, and it's inaccurate, shouldn't we call it out?

Personally, I value the quote mark more than any punctuation mark in the English language. A quote mark is supposed to mean that what was said is written exactly the way it was said. When someone changes what is said and punctuates it with quote marks, I think that person is deceitful and dishonest and I'll call them on it every time.

There's really no debate here as far as I'm concerned---- you either tell the truth or you don't.

1. YES.
And if it appears accurate, but is skewed by being taken out of context, that should be challenged as well.

3. It was wrong. Mods finally locked it. I pitched a fit.
BB changed the title, but the war was already started. Just another day in paradise.

Oh, and IBTL.

8. You assume because you pitched a fit, that is why it was locked?
My, you do have a high opinion of yourself.

10. That's not what I meant at all.
I called BB out on the thread. That was my fit pitch. That's why that sentence came after "the mods locked it".

Pretty crappy reply elocs.

When I disagree with the content of a thread I simply alert it and trust the mods to do their job.

On edit, I also notice that the thread calling out the mods got locked with the message:

Do not call out the mods. Questions/concerns about moderation should be directed to the administrators.

4. we need a paraphrase marker
for the way people use quotes nowadays. Maybe * would work. For example, I think gandhi said *an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth will make us all blind and toothless* But that's not a direct quote.

7. I don't like two spaces between sentences, myself. One will suffice. nt

11. One space, right?
I agree, one space better than no space, and double spacing not necessary.

9. Lord knows, I've called them on it....questioned the OP, that is.
I rarely alert, but I've asked the OP to edit, to reconsider, to rephrase or clarify, and I've sometimes been wrong about the intention.

It's not rocket science. You're right, it's not hard to make clear the purpose of the post with punctuation and by providing context.

And, BTW, I personally don't think this will be locked as it's not challenging the mods, but rather asking members what responses might be appropriate.

Unless the very phrase, "call it out", is too harsh, where "question it" or "challenge it" might have been more benign.

:toast:
