The media confirms its double-standard
The media confirms its double-standard

I've been waiting for something like this to happen -- the emergence of media-friendly personal character scandal about John McCain. It's not that I've been wishing ill-will on McCain -- rather, it's that I wanted to see how the media at large would respond.

And now it has happened, with the revelation -- ironically coming from Newsweek, an MSM staple -- that the McCains were in tax default on one of their properties, their payments delinquent by four years. I haven't watched the TV shows yet today, but I just looked through the print pages of the major newspapers and other than the initial report, there was not a single word, not a single mention, not a single story on the tax default.

Now I beg of you to consider, as Media Matters and debrazza have pointed out, that when John Edwards got a $400 haircut, that fact alone was used as a shorthand to describe his entire campaign.

But when John McCain, who has inveighed against Barack Obama as an elitist, has a tax default on one of his ten (or more) properties, total, complete silence.

It's a double-standard, and it's bad for America.

1. Un-frickin-real
always use the "what if it were the democrat?" yardstick and you'll know the answer immediately...

2. What a perfect example of the double standard.
I remember when jourrnalists were hugnrier, worked harder, and seemed to understand their importance in a democracy. Now it seems guided by "how many snarlky comments can we get out of this story?"

Thank goodness for the internet or we'd never know about McSame's deficiencies.

4. which is why
the MSM is fast becoming completely irrelevant. But you have to look at what the online community has spawned since 2004 first with Dean and now with Obama. We progressives were FORCED to go to alternative sources for our news and information and good things have come from that. As far as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox the ONLY thing worth watching is Hardball (sometimes) and Olbermann-other than that, since the primaries ended it's like, why bother?

3. The other hypocrisy that we're seeing today is about Wes Clark's
statement regarding McCain's POW status not being qualification for being a president.

Suddenly, "questioning" a candidates military service is a "third rail" in politics? I don't seem to remember this being a problem for the MSM during Kerry's campaign. They gleefully reported and re-reported the Swiftboaters accusations, and never once questioned it or considered it a third rail. Now, they are outraged at Clark's statement about McCain, even though, IMO, it's not questioning anyone's service...it's stating a fact.

7. So very true
I wish Obama's surrogates would push that point. Also bring up how Edwards was lambasted for his haircut and house.

I saw nothing of this McCain story on TV but it's posted on many blogs.

5. Agreed. That story was buried might quickly.
If Obama had 7 homes and was in default for one of them, he would have been labeled an elitist all day long.

8. That scenario would have been talked about non-stop, while McSame
gets a pass. It's very frustrating to watch this happening.

9. We're clearly seeing who the actual Republicans in the media are now
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 09:21 AM by cbc5g
And the ones that claim they are Democrats. Those attacking Wesley Clark are not Democrats or even independents. It's obvious here that flying in planes and getting shot down and being a POW does not logically prove that he's qualified for President. Clark also said (that the media isn't reporting) that Obama is running on judgment and change and not foreign policy cred.

We cannot cower to these RW MSM fools like Kerry did. Clark must get out there and put these assholes in their place.
