Clark Says He Offers "Higher Standard"
Moderators- AP stories don't really have paragraphs... they're usually many sentences. This post contains about 14 sentences.

By ANNE SAUNDERS
The Associated Press
Published: Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004

Clark pledged to take care of veterans, rebuild relations with Europe, and enforce laws to protect the environment.

He accused Republicans of using the phrase “family values” to divide people.

“You can’t take care of your family if you don’t have a job. You can’t take care of your family if you don’t have health insurance . . . .You can’t take care of a family if you can’t get your kids an education so they can have their own family. And you’re not telling about family values if you’re destroying the environment because the environment is what you’ll be passing on to your family,” he said.

Asked his views on nonmilitary assistance to other nations, Clark said, if elected, he would set up an agency that helps countries in crisis before military intervention becomes necessary.

“I think we’re overusing our military and we’re using them for things we’re not best suited for,” he said to veterans and their guests gathered at the Rochester VFW.

He pointed to countries such as Liberia, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria as trouble spots. He said the United States should help these nations take care of their people to avoid the instability that requires a military response.

At Calef’s Country Store, New Hampshire poet laureate Marie Harris was among those listening in the crowd. Though still an undecided voter, she said she liked some of what Clark had to say.

Jeremy Wright of Dover said he was just getting interested in the primary campaign and decided to check out Clark in person at Calef’s. “TV is flooded with Howard Dean so I want to see the other side of it,” he said.

I truly believe that the more people hear from General Clark, the more they will know that he is the one man who can lead our country to be the best that it can be.

Class, unless the democratic party is blind, deaf and dumb, the choice should be easy.

It's nice to know that DUers aren't the only ones to notice the 24/7 Dean coverage on TV.

Nice article. Thanks for posting it!

6. The doctrine of pre-emptive peace
from a man who knows foreign policy inside-out.

The world is filled with poor tinderboxes whose easily-inflamed populations are violent disasters-in-waiting. Many of them are fomer European colonies, meaning the possiblity for coordinated, enlightened policy exists between the U.S. and, dare I say, Old Europe. Our security depends on it.

We need the General.

7. 2 Great Statements --
“You can’t take care of your family if you don’t have a job. You can’t take care of your family if you don’t have health insurance . . . .You can’t take care of a family if you can’t get your kids an education so they can have their own family. And you’re not telling about family values if you’re destroying the environment because the environment is what you’ll be passing on to your family,”

-- brilliant

“TV is flooded with Howard Dean so I want to see the other side of it,”

-- how true

8. Media Blindness
My husband and I traveled to New Orleans on Dec. 29th to see the general. Amidst an entire room of Clark supporters, the local media chose to interview a self-confessed Dean supporter. We watched as she scribbled note after note, soaking up every word the Dean supporter said in the negative about the general we were all there to support. The coordinator of the event took a few of us over to the reporter and introduced us as supporters of the general. She gave us a weak smile, and excused herself. Five minutes later, she was back to her interviewee.

Later on the local news station, there was a 3 minute piece on Howard Dean, even though the general had been in their town that very afternoon.

It's up to the general to continue seeking media attention, since the media has already gotten behind their candidate.

21. It's some, but not all
There are many in the Dean movement that are there because they believe that Dean is in the best position to win.

There is a vocal minority on DU that is almost cultic in their devotion to Dean (having been in a cult for 20 years, I speak with experience on that). They accept no criticism as valid, everything is an "attack", even mistakes are ignored, forgotten, or explained away. If presented with a legitimate argument, they will dismiss it as "coming from the GOP, DLC, or PNAC".

Fortunately, for both Dean and the Democratic party, such people are a very small minority that won't matter for much longer, regardless of who wins the nomination.

23. Clark is opposed to the Patriot Act
From Clark's website:

I believe that law enforcement should have access to all necessary tools to deal with the problems of terrorism, which is why I'm calling for an immediate $40 billion investment in homeland security. But I don't believe that we can win a war on terror if we give up the essence of who we are as Americans. That's why I think that Congress should fully review the so-called USA PATRIOT Act - and repeal the provisions that go too far.

The USA PATRIOT Act was jammed through Congress in a matter of weeks, when the country was still in shock from the horrific attacks of September 11th. It wasn't carefully drafted and it wasn't fully debated. More troubling is that, in just two years, the Act has grown the tentacles that many feared. Last month, a Justice Department report admitted that the John Ashcroft has actually expanded the substantial reach of the Act, using it to snoop in secrecy for evidence of crimes that have nothing to do with terrorism.

Now Ashcroft is proposing the PROTECT Act. Among other curtailments, the proposed bill all but forbids prosecutors from agreeing to downward departures from the rigid federal sentencing guidelines, increasing the chance that individual punishments won't actually fit individual crimes. It also instructs prosecutors to report judges that order departures from sentencing guidelines - creating the very real possibility that judges will be put on a DOJ blacklist.

I am concerned that the USA PATRIOT Act goes too far in expanding the authority of government investigators, and that it does so without sufficient oversight. We need to make sure that we are taking responsible measures to meet the needs of the time. That's why I'll call on Congress to fully review each provision of the Act, study the ways in which each has been used in practice, and eliminate those provisions that unduly threaten our civil liberties.

26. Yup, Clark states things so clearly.
“You can’t take care of your family if you don’t have a job. You can’t take care of your family if you don’t have health insurance . . . .You can’t take care of a family if you can’t get your kids an education so they can have their own family. Family values...right.
