If someone posts a lie about Hillary, others buy it, and post ten more threads...
based on that LIE.

Hillary Clinton is NOT $31 million dollars on debt.

Yet someone who evidently can't read large numbers, much less a spreadsheet, claims such, and the lie grows by others posting lies based on the original lie.

Here's the thing. We don't know what Clinton's financial situation looks like tonight. We don't have enough information tonight, but we probably will tomorrow.

But don't let the truth stop y'all from spreading the lies.

And this from the people who've lectured Hillary supporters on "the math."

That seems to reflect a $7 million increase in debt?

On edit - not debt necessarily, but negative cash flow. Neither are particularly good, depending upon asset balances.

And upon further reflection...wtf does this have to do with politics, really? Symptom of a too-long primary....

108. A really minor point...

Not that it matters a whole lot, and especially not to alienate someone who clearly seems to be supporting her candidate without trying to sabotage the process, but this note -- from within the text of the LA Times retraction, suggests that she's added to that debt:

Additionally, campaign officials said the New York senator gave herself another $1.4 million loan in May, producing a total current debt of $20.88 million. But the latest loan that occurred in May will not show up on finance filings until next month.

Does not erase bad management and financial decisions made by her campaign. If she breaks even by the end, good for her. It's the only viable reason for her to even put up the illusion of fighting for the nomination. And if people are stupid enough to send her their hard-earned money when she's got a personal fortune of her own, I pity the fool.

49. Yes..
10. Cash on Hand at CLOSE of the Reporting Period 29,666,453.10
6. Cash on Hand at BEGINNING of the Reporting Period - 31,711,745.93
-2,045,292.83

7. Total Receipts This Period 26,911,626.98
9. Total Disbursements This Period - 28,956,919.81
-2,045,292.83

So she was 2 million short and paid for it out of her cash on hand. Her unpaid debts are about 19 million, it's not clear how much of her cash on hand is for the GE, which would make it unusable by her campaign to pay off debts incurred during the primary.

59. I'll go with the AP over a blog. AP verifies that she isn't 31 mil in debt...
but her debt load remained what it was the previous month, give or take a mil.

Snip/

But Clinton reported only about $8 million cash on hand for the primary. (She has $22 million set aside for the general election that she can't use.) She also reported $19.5 million in debts, including $10 million she has lent her campaign. Even without the loan, Clinton was in negative cash position. The loan amount also did not include an extra $1.4 million she put into her campaign in May.

Clinton did not add to her debt to vendors, who include such campaign consultants as Mark Penn and Mandy Grunwald. But she had to ramp up her spending, with a majority of it devoted to traveling and getting her message to voters. She spent more than $9 million on ads alone.

However- in that AP article it states this:

(SNIP)
Financially, the month tracked the three candidates' political fortunes. Clinton beat Obama in Pennsylvania on April 22 and saw a $10 million surge in donations in a 24-hour period. But money and the delegates needed for the nomination still flowed primarily to Obama.
(SNIP)

But when you look at the financial disclosures that have been posted ad nauseam on the board in the last 12 hours there isn't a day she got 10 million. Certainly not as her campaign said the day or two after PA. I won't post a link here because the links been beaten to death.

Suffice it to say, until a good accountant gets ahold of the information and actually takes the time to number crunch we really can't be sure how much is owed or on hand.

Frankly, I really don't see why people are beating this till it tries to crawl.

82. Maddy, it's not rocket science.
Again, take the debt listed in debt by vendor (19.5 mil) try to find the loan in debt by vendor (not there). Add the loan to debts by vendor and that gets you to 31 mil.

61. Clintophobes are easily the biggest liars in this sector of the universe.
Edited on Wed May-21-08 06:42 AM by Perry Logan
They love to start threads accusing Hillary of some new LIE!, where LIE! and LYING! and LIAR! are always in all caps.

And--as others in this thread have noted--the accusations invariably get disproved, sometimes with the first post. But this has no effect whatsoever on the Clinton-haters. They are as crazy as loons and not overly bright.

62. LA Times
Headline Money shocker! Hillary Clinton's campaign debt soars to $31 million
snip/... numbers crunched early this morning by The Times' campaign finance guru, Dan Morain.

snip/... Debts $19.5 million
snip/... Loans $11.4 Million

snip/... she spent $28.9 million, nearly $8 million more than she took in

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/05/clintondebt.html

Please read, mark, learn - and inwardly digest because someone who does know how to deal with big numbers proves you to be mislead by the campaign you do so much to support, Maddie. So please do not call such DUers liars until you learn simple arithmetic.

65. So, she's $31 million in debt?
Disgusting. What a horrible money manager. She keeps throwing good money after bad, not knowing when to stop, just digging a deeper hole of debt.

She is not fit to serve as President with such piss poor management.

66. HRC supporters arent so good at math...
Copy and paste the debt by vendor page into a spreadsheet then total it. That's 19.5 million, NOW try and find the loan to herself on that spreadsheet...it's not there. Now add in the loan.

Instead of berating other posters try doing some math.

It was reported as such and it was an error. It's been corrected and posting said correction would be more productive than name calling.

Just my opinion. Not that it matters much since GDP is not know for it's fairness or diplomacy by the majority of it's posters. It's more like an on going grudge match between rival gangs.
