BREAKING: Obama opens up massive gigantic 16 point lead over Senator Clinton
Biggest yet

Gallup Daily: Obama Opens Up 16-Point Lead, Biggest YetLead is now 55% to 39% over ClintonUSA Democrats Election 2008 Gallup Daily Americas Northern America PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking finds Barack Obama with his largest advantage over Hillary Clinton in Democratic voters' nomination preferences thus far, 55% to 39%.

Obama's previous largest lead was 11 percentage points, in May 15-17 and April 12-14 polling. His widening lead over Clinton has been evident in each of the last three days of tracking, after the two had been more closely matched earlier in the month.

Clinton's largest lead in the Gallup Poll Daily tracking was 20 points in mid-January, when she led Obama 48% to 28% (John Edwards was still in the race at that time). (To view the complete trend since Jan. 3, 2008, click here.)

Tuesday, voters in Kentucky and Oregon will register their preferences for the Democratic nomination. Clinton is expected to win Kentucky and Obama Oregon. There is some speculation that Obama may declare victory given that he is expected to clinch a majority of the delegates available in the state primaries and caucuses (outside of the contested Florida and Michigan primaries). Clinton has vowed to stay in the race until all the primaries and caucuses have been held in early June.

Despite her growing deficit to Obama in the Democratic race, Clinton continues to poll slightly better than Obama in matchups for the general presidential election vs. John McCain. The latest tracking results, based on May 14-18 polling, shows Clinton with a 48% to 44% lead over McCain among registered voters nationwide, while Obama has just a 1-point edge (46% to 45%) over the likely Republican nominee. -- Jeff Jones

1. Voters are facing reality...
This is bad for Hillary.

Especially since she doesn't know what reality is. Her metric of "I'm winning by the popular vote!" in which
she doesn't count SEVEN caucus states--is quite delusional.

I just want to run up to her and say, "You aren't running for homecoming queen, sweetheart! It's not about
how popular you are! It's about the delegates!"

Maybe Wolfson can tell her, when she's ready to return to the land of the living.

12. I think that Sen. Clinton would be helping
the fortunes of the Democratic Center Right by negotiating the majority leader Senate slot, as a concession.

Otherwise the DLC is going to find itself in a difficult position, as progressive, anti war Dems start filling former Widestance seats. That would be the position of not being the leadership. But it is not a disaster being the minority within the majority. You can always triangulate, for example.

I suggest they rebrand as the the Democratic Business Caucus. They will always have corporate input to bring to the table, and we are a big tent party.

They will always be our hawks, and sometimes you need to let them fly. Of course, they would be more useful to us if they were swooping on the wide stance party criminals as well.

But climate, oil, Iraq, and healthcare are moving the average Joe to the left.
Sen. Clinton may stake out the center in the Senate, and do well.

It might even be a better thing for the nation in the long run.

32. It isn't a consession prize for running or for being a woman
it is an offer of a defined role for what's left of the DLC.

Better the Blue Dogs doing the party a good service than a long protracted struggle for control of a party whose center has moved to the left of them.

65. Excellent point
But climate, oil, Iraq, and healthcare are moving the average Joe to the left.

I think that's an excellent analysis. The terrorist attacks briefly moved everyone to the right under the guise of "safety" and "protection." But now that EVERYONE is hurting from rising fuel, gas and food prices, not to mention the erosion of civil rights and liberties under Bush, I think you're right and that more people will shift towards the left. Great point!

And props to EVERYONE for not responding to VotesforWomen!!!! Great job, folks!! I know it's hard.

30. Wrong. Any national head-to-head between either of them and McCain
are meaningless, because they reflect the partisan answers of the primaries. National polls between Obama and Clinton, however, are perfectly valid - they are, in fact, the ONLY valid polls in assessing their standing with each other.

Are you really that confused?

Obama has the lead in pledged delegates, in superdelegates, in the popular vote and in number of contests won. AND national polls show him leading Hillary by a significant margin. Do you think the few remaining contests can possibly change that, at this stage?

Are you really that delusional?

More to the point, national polls on primary preferences may have some interest at the beginning of state-by-state primaries. They are completely without meaning at the end.

85. Actually, just the opposite is true.
Before the primaries begin, nobody really knows the candidates. Polls at the beginning are nothing more than name recognition.

For instance, if California were to have a re-vote today, polls suggest that Obama would win it, not Hillary. Early polls gave it to her, and the early election date gave it to her, but now, with people knowing better who Obama is, there are millions with buyers remorse who would gladly switch to Obama if they could. The recent polls suggest that. Therefore, recent national polls, which show general trends across the country, ARE more indicative of what the public likes better than early polls, or even early elections.

It is those national polls that give me confidence that Obama is going to kick McCain's butt.

Sheesh.

(btw, do you honestly think Karl Marx would back HRC? He probably wouldn't be that thrilled about Obama, but I can't see him endorsing somebody who once sat on the WalMart board. Disregard this, of course, if you're just anti-Obama instead of pro-HRC.)

87. Well, you know the old Marxist tactic -
give the corporate moneyed interests a free hand and they will destroy themselves. I think that Marx would be glad to see Hillary up against McCain - either way, the conflict between the leaders and the proletariat would be intensified. Marx would NOT like Obama - real liberals are an anathema to Marxists.

64. In a poll. A Gallup poll.
Which really means diddly-shit.

Oh, and nice post total of 33. The Obama DU supporters should be banned en masse, with their continuing waves of repetitive new accounts, so they can post more misleading spam.

That is, if DU had any integrity.

77. Yet he still can't plot a win in the GE
What is Obama trying to tell us? That a Democratic Party win in November doesn't matter?
