CBS: Kerry now beats Bush among veterans
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 06:02 PM by jburton
CBS Nightly News Poll

Basically said Bush* LOST his double-digit lead over Kerry among Vets

Now Kerry is ahead of Bush 48% to 47%

Sure it's a statistically insignificant lead, but the HUGE shift is the real story here.

Guess those SwiftVets ads are backfiring...

5. Good news, but
Polls of veterans can be hard to pin down. People who served in only active duty or reserves? Did they have to have fought in a war? Are active duty included? But I always thought the political balance among veterans was more evenly mixed.

13. Good questions
All the same, I am thrilled with this poll.

Several days ago I read (can't remember where) that Bush led Kerry by 10% among families who had relatives in Afghanistan and Iraq and that he led even more among veterans. So, this current poll is good news to me.

6. After the democratic convention Bush looks like shit.
And Kerry looks strong when he stood next to all those veterans he fought with.

11. I think that trend will continue
With Sen. John McCain's strong rejection of the swiftboatbats' smear campaign and Tommy Franks' statement to the same extent (asserting that Kerry would make a fine CinC) I think the swiftboatbats in the long run will turn out to be the best thing that could have happened to Kerry.

12. what makes this even more interesting from a polling perspective
....is that the GOP usually enjoys a good lead among white males.

So, assuming that most of these vets are white males, you are seeing a real skew in the polling for this subdemographic.

22. Nixon's Second Term
jburton, thanks for that link. I caught a headline on there and I clicked which brought me to another story about Nixon looking at how he was going to win a second term.

The Nixon tapes imply that he was willing to sacrifice more troops in order to try and help him with a second term. Now, the reason why I mention this is because on the news not long ago, they played some tapes in which Nixon's trying to figure out how to get Kerry off his back. It was obvious he was afraid of him.

From what I've learned so far is that Nixon wanted to get out of Vietnam with honor and win it. It seems to me that given this new information, and how he wanted to shut Kerry up, combined with the fact the war was getting worse, he was getting in a bind.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/05/26/politics/main619719.shtml

Those swiftvet jerks have got me learning more about the Vietnam War than I ever would have before. I just got one thing to say to them.

F*** you very much :headbang:

26. Thanks, SwiftVets for Bush. You turned any honorable veteran
against Bush who apparently approves of the utterly disgusting tactics of right-wing fundies.

With their ad, SwiftVets for Bush have dishonored and questioned all veterans who served in any war and received a medal. Especially since those losers support an AWOL draft dodger who used his daddy's connections to stay at home while thousands of soldiers where willing to fight and to die for their country in Vietnam.

No wonder Bush is so incompetent and unsuccessful in his war against terror. He never experienced what it really means to fight and look death right in the eye.

27. Another Proud Veteran for Kerry
There are many of Veterans who are mad at this administration. They are tired of having the deployments extended. They are tired of seeing companies like Haliburton make billions while their families get food stamps. They have been lied to by this administration and they are looking for leadership, not talk!!!

The poll is over a week old, though.

http://www.sptimes.com/2004/08/08/Columns/Veterans_are_divided_.shtml

Then again, a CBS poll released last week suggested that 48 percent of registered voters who have served in the military backed Kerry, while 47 percent supported Bush. In June, CBS found Bush leading Kerry among veterans by 14 percentage points.
