What will you be doing on Election Night?
Will you watch the returns? If so, where? On TV? The Internet? Will you pull an all-nighter here on DU? Or will you go to bed and just check the results in the morning?

Here is my plan: I am going to have a dry-erase board with a map of the United States on it. And I'll have two markers: Blue and Red. You can figure out the rest. :D

1. I've just bought a large television set.
And I'll be having a small group of friends over at my place for a returns party. Either way, we'll be getting waaaay wicked pissah drunk. And either way, I'm not going to school the following day.

Then I will be in a total celebration mode.

And if he loses with any luck I will be too bombed to notice!

Truthfully I don't know how I am going to stand the anxiety...

I wish I could hibernate for about 5 years and someone can tell me later how it works out! :(

The Electoral College Calculator, version 2.2. The perfect companion to a presidential election.

http://www.grayraven.com/ec/

The early part of the evening, I'm going to watch returns, both online and on TV. (Ahh, the joys of a laptop.) I'll have a big computer monitor in one corner which will show the ECC with results filled in, main TV on CSPAN or MSNBC, and I'll be running projections on my laptop. Once the election is sealed (assuming it goes the right way) I'm going to stage my own balloon drop, shoot off some illegal fireworks (red white and blue, natch), and pop the cork on some champagne.

As you might guess, I've been considering this for awhile.

I just realized a couple of weeks ago that I will be out of the country at a conference.

I will be in Europe on election night--specifically, Madrid. It should be fascinating to experience the results with Europeans, provided the results are tolerable.

Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 07:33 PM by mvd
I know I'll be watching at home on TV. If the polls are like they are now or Kerry is ahead by more than now, I'll be planning or hoping for an all-night celebration. I'd also want to make the next day have a special dinner or something. If Bush is clearly ahead in the polls, I could be making some plans to move. I'm a big Holidays person, and the Holidays wouldn't be the same with a Bush win.

26. On election night 2000 I was on an airline trip.
I was on an overnight in Burlington, VT. I watched, and watched, and watched, knowing I should turn off the TV. I did. I couldn't sleep. I turned it back on. God it was bad!

I slept very little and had to fly a Boeing 737-400 to Pittsburgh and Kansas City the next day. My co-pilot (a Bu$h supporter, but an open-minded guy) and I talked about the hung election on the way to KC. We had a 30 hour lay-over in KC so we went out, late-afternoon, for a couple of beers and a burger. Of course the election coverage was still on TV. The rest, as the man says, is history. Grim, dark, scary history. That co-pilot now agrees with me and will vote for Kerry.

Now that I am retired I don't have to worry about whether or not I can watch the returns. I will. I'll pop some popcorn and swill some iced tea or wine. I'm not sure where I'll be. I am registered to vote in Greenville, SC (where I have a condo). But I'll probably be back up on the mountain by that evening. I will try to vote absentee as will Dr. DemoTex. Either way, I will definitely long for Texas' early voting.

hearing Tom Brokaw saying that Bush was the winner and Gore had just called him to concede. I woke up the next morning to find that nobody in particular was going to be the next President. Then the shit started in earnest.

I hope and pray it doesn't happen again.

when Bush steals the election again.

I wish I were kidding. If Bush loses the popular vote but wins the electoral college, I predict riots. If Bush wins and things look stinky in Florida or Ohio or anywhere, I predict riots. I want to be right there with them.

As a gray-haired grandmother with 3 cats, I promise not to destroy any personal property, but I want my voice to be added in a real, not virtual, way to the many screams of disgust and outrage.

In any case, I'll be home, watching on TV and the computer. I'll be biting my fingernails, toenails, pillows, the couch, and anything else I can find.

It depends on the polls. I will not start watching until the polls close no matter what, I just can't take that much TV blather. I'm still debating how to celebrate if Kerry wins. If Bush wins I'll just go to bed and wake up depressed the next day. It's going to be a LOOOONG day. If Kerry wins I will probably stay up until his acceptance speech unless things get really ridiculous.
