* Ads in SF Bay Area??? Interesting.
OK, it is not likely that Shrub would normally win any SF Bay Area districts. So why did I just see an ad this morning here in the BA touting his fight against terrorism?

Gee, could it be that they're capitalizing on the terror alerts/fear bulltetins issued of late? Do they now believe that with enough fear instilled into the hearts of even Dems, they can win California? Or at least force K-E to spend money here?

How can anyone NOT see that at the very least, they're shamelessly exploiting our fear, and more likely organizing a barrage of terror-related news, to be followed up by their political ads, to try and take the election? Will the media question any of this? Uh, right.

And oh yeah, what happened to Iraq? Don't we still have soldiers dying over there? "nothing to see here, nothing to see, move along, beware the terrorists--there could be some hiding in your kitchen cabinets!"

The more we hear about terror, the better Shrub's chances; the more we hear about problems in Iraq, the better Kerry's chances (as Tweety pointed out himself this morning). I Wonder if the media will take note when over the next 3 months we only hear about terrorism, and nothing about Iraq (unless something really big happens there).

Makes me ill.

OK, now I'll get back to doing something productive to help ensure we win in Nov.

1. Well, being from the San Francisco...
It's something like 80% democrats, so I doubt it would be very effective. However, the term "bay area", considered by some, can extend far down the peninsula, just depends. There are pockets in the bay area that are conservative. To me, they are waisting their money, so let them.

2. Could be to support the rest of the ballot
It could be to get the base out so that the rest of the ballot is supported so that Republicans and Republican initiatives don't die on the vine.

Or to give the CA base something to talk about when they phone other wavering voters in other states.

Hard to know. Any other ideas?

3. Was it on cable?
This might be wrong...but can a candidate buy a national ad, which will run nationally, on cable?

Or do they just purchase ads to run in local areas?

(at which point I see it as a good waste of GW's campaign fund)

4. Probably a cable ad, not a local Bay Area ad (many reasons why)
GW Bush wouldn't run an ad in the Bay Area, because a Republican running an ad in a heavily Democratic area would energize the Democratic base to come out and vote against them. Kerry has a 40-point lead in the Bay Area according to the last poll, and that's 9 counties/7 million people. His lead in SF is probably around 60 points.

Even in conservative parts of the Bay Area, where Republicans are at parity at best, Kerry is likely to win over Bush. Bush will have trouble carrying even Orange County this year, Gore came within a point of doing that in 2000 and Bush is much less popular now.

6. Think it's a ploy to get Kerry to spend time in Cali
They did the same thing to Gore. Gore took the red herring

7. More, Shrub, more!
The more $ they spend barking at the moon in the SF bay area, the less they have to spend where it will matter. The electoral college system causes absurd distortions and leads to bizarre strategies, but I can't fathom why they would spend here -- California is blue all they way....isn't it?
