Hastert, has turned to the lyrics of pop singer Alanis Morissette.
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 05:04 PM by Kadie
Looking to strike just the right note of poignant anger, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., has turned to the lyrics of pop singer Alanis Morissette.

The Morissette song "Ironic" fits John Kerry's presidential campaign and may be a theme song possibility for the Democratic National Convention, Hastert's office suggested.

In a memo titled "Isn't it ironic?" Hastert spokesman John Feehery said Kerry could have announced his choice of John Edwards as a running mate at a union hall or a church in a black community. Kerry's ironic choice, the memo says, was the Pennsylvania estate of his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

"Two multimillionaires taking a break from their tea and crumpets to tell the masses they want to lead them into battle. Is this noblesse oblige or is it just perfect irony," Feehery wrote for Hastert.

3. Aren't Bush and Cheney multimillionaires?
I guess the difference is that Bush and Cheney's base are millionaires also. It doesn't matter if the rich pander to the rich but if the rich try to help the not so rich there is something wrong. I now see why Bush and Cheney feel it is wrong to help the not so rich. Compassionate conservatism means, "we will help the rich get richer and if you are lucky enough to get rich we will help you too. Now how's that for compassion?"

13. As Kerry said on 60 minutes...
"Who's making these claims? Bush the billionaire and Cheney the millionaire?"

4. huh. I'd say the Kerry campaign
contains about as much irony as that song. nil.

The only thing ironic about the lyrics is that they contain not one actual instance of irony. And that is pretty ironic, so I guess I'll give her this one.

5. The difference here is....
The wealth of people like Kerry and Edwards allowed them to serve others through public service....the likes of Bushco is only self-serving ;)

6. Funny thing is, the song lyrics have NOTHING to do with IRONY
"like rain on your wedding day?"

No, Alannis, that's NOT irony. That's just a bummer. IRONY would be if it rained on your wedding day, and you were marrying the Greek sun god Apollo.

Damn kids these days..... :grr:

7. Pretty tragic seeing someone so OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY
trying to be 'hip' by quoting contemporary music.

Nothing looks more pathetic....or desperate.

So they've got money. So what. They EARNED it. DEAL WITH IT.

11. But he didn't announce at the farm
He announced it a rally in Pittsburgh. He just made the first appearance with Edwards at the farm. Hastert's office was just plain wrong on that point.
