Good thing HRC won't be Dem nominee when Gary Webb movie comes out soon.
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 10:29 AM by blm
For those unaware of Webb, he was a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter who wrote about the CIA drugrunning operation of Poppy Bush's in a 1996 series in the San Jose Mercury News - a report that caused official DC, under the control of the Clinton administration at the time, to actively close rank around Poppy, protecting his secrecy and privilege over the truth of the historic record in that IranContra related operation.

When this movie about Webb comes out, I wonder how much of the film will cover the ongoing protection of GHWBush on his operations that saw the dumping of tons of cheap IranContra cocaine into cities across America and specifically targeting black communities, triggering the crack epidemic of the 80s that has continued to plague this country for two decades now.

I think Americans will be appalled when they begin to hear what was done in THEIR name by past administrations and by their protectors in the national media - in this case official DC in 1996 used the NYT, the Wa Post and the LA Times to mislead the public.

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_di...

>>>>>
Webb was a prominent investigative reporter for the Mercury News when the paper published his series on CIA involvement in the crack epidemic in 1996. After the package ran, other news outlets began to criticize the work and attempt to poke holes in much of Webb's theory.

Eventually, his editors also found fault in the series, ran an apologetic editor's note, and demoted Webb to a suburban beat. He quit the paper in 1997, spending several years in a series of non-journalism jobs before taking up with an alternative weekly in Sacramento, Ca., in 2004.

But just months after starting at that paper, he was found dead from two gunshot wounds to the head in his home. It was ruled a suicide.

Since the series ran, and Webb's death, critics have continued to question his work and claim some of his reporting was off. But many others, including former colleagues and author Schou, contend he was unfairly treated and that his series was a good piece of journalism that exposed CIA misdeeds.
>>>>>

"We are once again making these deals with the Devil," Landesman said about today's government and CIA activities. "Gary had stumbled on something. Webb discovered this massive industry at the time that dove-tailed with the very thing our government wanted to snuff out with a war on drugs."

He said the fact that other news outlets took such harsh shots at Webb is also part of the story. "The New York Times, The Washington Post and the L.A Times came after Webb in a way that was deeply personal and politically agenda-ized and systematically destroyed him and his story," he said. "Webb had the audacity to report it like any other story, not understanding what the ramifications would be."

61. Why does US-occupied Afghanistan produce 75% of the world's heroin?
Because, as a blogger who worked for military intelligence insisted
on an election website 4 years ago, THAT IS HOW COVERT FUNDING WORKS.

He said drugs are the only usable currency, they are easier to smuggle
than diamonds, and "the drugs are going to get to the users with or
without our help." This was a recently retired guy who worked military
intelligence in Southeast Asia. A DEMOCRAT, arguing with DEMOCRATS
on an election blog about why these revelations were NOT important.

When the DEA is cooperating with it, and intelligence agencies are growing fat off of the profits... when the military-industrial-oil complex is growing exponentially at the expense of our democracy --- then something is wrong!

McCain could come out looking better than Clintons if this movie questions the protection given GHWBush by the administration in charge at the time.

Obama won't have that burden, and he can attack McCain for siding with Bush's policies in the 80s.

Very painful time.

I'll clip from the diary....Webb's own words...discussing censored news stories....

>>>>>
If we had met five years ago, you wouldn't have found a more staunch defender of the newspaper industry than me ... I was winning awards, getting raises, lecturing college classes, appearing on TV shows, and judging journalism contests. So how could I possibly agree with people like Noam Chomsky and Ben Bagdikian, who were claiming the system didn't work, that it was steered by powerful special interests and corporations, and existed to protect the power elite?"

"And then I wrote some stories that made me realize how sadly misplaced my bliss had been. The reason I'd enjoyed such smooth sailing for so long hadn't been, as I'd assumed, because I was careful and diligent and good at my job ... The truth was that, in all those years, I hadn't written anything important enough to suppress."

After all, that drugrunning operation of Poppy Bush's was centered for years out of an airport in Arkansas.

If Clintons knew they looked the other way for Poppy. If they didn't know, then they are the wrong people to put in charge of tracking global terror networks that get their funding from drugrunning and covert armsdealing.

14. Just saw another documentary "Damage Done" from my PVR off of Free Speech TV earlier...
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 11:24 AM by calipendence
It's a documentary where law enforcement folks, judges, etc. all say that the "prohibition" on drugs is totally screwed up and that we need a new set of laws that doesn't thrive on sending people to prison and the profits and corruption surrounding it.

http://www.nfb.ca/webextension/damage-done/home.php

One part of it had a former DEA agent, Cele Castillo, who was very well meaning when he started the job in trying to prevent big drug trafficking from getting up here to the states. But then he shows where he's documented the corruption of the Contras with the drug trade then, and that his reports he sent back to Washington were in effect flushed down "a black hole" instead of being heard.

http://www.nfb.ca/webextension/damage-done/cops/CeleCas...

Edit: Note from this page there's a book that looks to be a good reference for this story. The comments below here reference Webb's work too in context.

http://www.amazon.com/Powderburns-Cocaine-Contras-Drug-... /

a comment:
Castillo, a former DEA field agent, stationed in Central America became an unwitting witness to the CIA's, Oliver North's, and the Reagan Administration's involvement in the smuggling of cocaine to fund the Contra army. Published years before the 1997 San Jose Mercury News/Gary Webb article, "Dark Alliance", about the CIA's role in bringing crack to the streets of America, Castillo provides a shocking but entirely credible story from the inside. Castillo, during the course of his field investigations into cocaine smuggling, inevitably ran into the CIA's cocaine network. A fly-drugs-up/fly-guns-down network operated by Oliver North, Richard Secord, and CIA front company Southern Air Transport out of the Ilopango airbase in El Salvador. He was repremanded time and time again by his DEA superiors for sticking his nose places it didn't belong. Warned off by claims he was endangering missions critical to our National Security. Yet, Castillo continued to file tell-all reports to the DEA in Washington. This is the story of the uncovering of these revelations, and one man's fight to expose the truth and bring these injustices to light. I highly recommend it.

Another comment:
The foreward, written by Michael Levine, encourages the reader to cancel all appointments for the next several hours as the reader will not be able to put this book down. Levine wasn't kidding. This book is about the life of Cele Castillo. It begins with Cele's childhood under the rule of a military father. Cele ends up being drafted for the Vietnam war and his experiences in Vietnam are so amazingly vivid that it's impossible to put this book down. The drug use in Vietnam was so rampant that this is where Cele learns that narcotics were much more of a threat to America than Communism as he vows to fight the illegal drug industry if he ever makes it out of Vietnam in one piece. Cele survives the jungle, the snipers, and even his first helicopter crash. He's hired by the DEA and assigned to work in New York. He works hard, risking his life many times to bust drug dealers and ends up working in Central America. As if a second helicopter crash and being the guy responsible for upsetting powerful drug lords weren't risky enough, Cele stumbles upon the CIA and Oliver North's involvement in the illegal drug industry & illegal gun running during the Iran-Contra scandal, which also involved Bush Sr. & the Reagan administration. North & his crew were selling over-priced weapons to Iran as well as selling tons of cocaine to American cities as they used all of those profits to buy massive amount of weapons that they flew in to the Contras. As the cash and weapons were flown into the Contras, cocaine was brought back to America under the protection of the US military and CIA. The airplanes & airplane hangars were all CIA and NSA owned, and the pilots (Barry Seal & others) were contracted by the CIA. The corruption and involvement of our own CIA in the illegal drug industry wasn't enough to make Cele give up, he kept fighting to make a dent in the illegal drug industry. He was warned to stay away from the operations of Oliver North and the CIA but he pressed on anyway. That's when his career suffered as an internal investigation was launched against him. As if death threats and surviving a plane crash (his 3rd crash) weren't enough, trumped-up charges were used against him to end his career at the DEA. Cele risked his life countless times, got tons of cocaine off the streets of America & traded his marriage for dedication to his career. Senator John Kerry's investigation went nowhere, Bush Sr. pardoned North's crew as they only got a slap on the wrist (probation) while the DEA rewarded Cele by ending his career.

35. I found this synopsis of American Gangster. It's on DVD for $24.95
http://streetgangs.com/movies/agbetone.html

'Freeway' Ricky Ross was the first crack king of Los Angeles, a hustler whose product fed the violent streets of his city. Ross didn't start out bad -- he was a charming and athletic kid who was once an all-city tennis champ. But when his dreams of earning a tennis scholarship evaporated, Ross took to the streets and began to sell drugs. But his life was truly changed when he got involved with the '80s fastest growing product -- crack cocaine. At the height of his career, Ross was selling $2 to $3 million of coke a day. Ross's dealings not only impacted the local community, but the international drug trade as well. This episode will chronicle Ross' rise and fall in narcotics distribution, as well as discuss his unwitting connection to the infamous Reagan-era CIA/Iran-Contras scandal.

And they would not have an easy medium of exchange (high cost per pound)
for covert activities such as surveilling Bin Laden throughout the 1990's,
meeting with him, intercepting his plans, intercepting copies of the
wire transfer from SA and Pakistan funding him, etc. Generally, without
drug money (including intercepted billions in proceeds from selectively
enforced major sting operations) we could not afford to keep tabs on the
REAL terrorists!!! Things would fall thru the net!

I remember when this story broke. Maxine Waters held hearings about it.

It was really a sad day in America when the media treated him the way they did.

I wish someone would also do a movie on Danny Casolaro. Casolaro was found dead in a bathtub in the Sheraton Inn, Martinsburg, West Virginia, one day after allegedly arranging to meet a source in connection with an investigation he had referred to as "the Octopus." His research centered around a complex story called the Inslaw affair, and a sprawling conspiracy theory supposedly connected to it.

Casolaro alleged that he was nearly ready to have revealed a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy spanning Iran-Contra, October Surprise, the closure of Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), the bombing of Pan Am 103, and involving the Central intelligence Agency (CIA), Mossad, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the U.S. Justice Dept, the Wackenhut Corporation, and the British security and intelligence services. Writing in the Columbia Journalism Review, Phil Linsalata notes, "Any one of those stories, of course, is a challenge for America's best journalists. Casolaro wanted to tackle them all."

32. Ah yes, Lombardi
I had to do a quick wiki, because I remembered him but had forgotten the details.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Lombardi

Lombardi's drawings purport to document financial and political frauds by power brokers. His 1999 drawing, entitled George W. Bush, Harken Energy and Jackson Stephens, ca 197990, shows the proven connections between James Bath, the Bush and bin Laden families, and business deals in Texas and around the world.

Isn't it interesting that he knew of the Bush and bin Laden's connections BEFORE any of us had heard the name bin Laden?.?.?

I had a dream the other day concerning the Bush Cabal. I was working on a video for a class project dealing with the Cabal. I was late to class because I was being chased down by a helicopter, I jumped a fence, only to have a gun pointed at my head right behind my left ear. Luckily, someone from who knows where, came to my rescue. I made it to class, only to have been approached by Poppy himself and he told me to desist in my project. I told him he would not intimidate me, and he left. However, there was a Psy-ops man in the class with me.
After leaving class, there were a few more episodes with gunmen. At which point I forced myself to wake up, because my heart was beating too fast.

And that couldn't have happened without Clinton's administration supplying the 'officials' the coverup reporters used to deny Webb's account.

19. Gary Webb's brand of Investigative Journalism
is as dead as he is. Every American should know this story.

Click here to go straight to the restored Dark Alliance website.

For the better part of a decade, a San Francisco Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to the Crips and Bloods street gangs of Los Angeles and funneled millions in drug profits to a Latin American guerrilla army run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a Mercury News investigation has found.

This drug network opened the first pipeline between Colombias cocaine cartels and the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a city now known as the crack capital of the world.
From the introduction to the original Dark Alliance website, August, 1996

The Dark Alliance logo. Jerry Ceppos called it too suggestive.
The investigative journalism series that started it all that changed (or at least, at long last, confirmed) the way all of us think about the war on drugs, the CIA, and U.S. policy toward Latin America has had a troubled life on the Internet.

In August 1996, Gary Webb began publishing the results of a yearlong investigation that traced the money fueling the horrific U.S.-backed contra war against Nicaragua to the profits from Los Angeles 1980s crack epidemic. The CIA led its contra army to spend the entire decade terrorizing the Nicaraguan people and their Sandinista government, happily allowing the contras to flood Los Angeles and other North American cities with cocaine to fund their efforts. Gary provided extensively documented evidence that while poor communities in L.A. paid the price of the crack explosion from rampant addiction in their neighborhoods to oppressive law enforcement and jailing with Reagans stepped-up war on drugs the United States government protected the men moving a great deal of the drugs coming into the city. Local dealers faced life sentences while the bigtime narcos from Washington to Managua went free.

What came next is well known. Garys story, and the website he and the San Jose Mercury News created to showcase and expand upon it, were initially the talk of the global village. Politicians cited the article in both Sacramento and Washington. The CIA launched an internal investigation. Millions of people were visiting the website.

But then the backlash came. The L.A. Times, embarrassed at having missed a major story on its own turf, and the New York Times, happy to follow its colleagues lead in squashing a story that didnt fit with its own narrative, wielded their mercenary pens against him. Rather than follow up on his exhaustive research, the attack dogs on both coasts pulled his work apart and attacked him for things he hadnt even said. Although the CIAs internal investigation would later confirm many of Garys own claims, the paper retracted the story and marginalized Gary to the point where he was forced to quit.

so those who support her SHOULD care, too.

This movie comes out and McCain camp can turn it more easily on Clinton for the coverups for GHWBush that included targeting Webb PROFESSIONALLY and PERSONALLY, whereas Obama can use it to tar McCain for siding with Bush's policies that included the drugrunning.

You don't see it because you don't want to have to admit what happened and the role Clinton played in protecting Poppy Bush and the powerful elite involved.

You do know that global drugrunning networks go hand in hand with global terror networks, don't you?

30. Yes - Webb fell into the story from the transcripts of narco-terror hearings
conducted by Kerry where sworn testimony was taken on these matters. The press ignored these hearings, and no doubt they were downplayed deliberately. Imagine the rioting across America that would have occurred if Americans REALLY UNDERSTOOD that it was official government operations that were triggering the rising drug problems in every city in every region of the country.

43. also, remember Danny Casolaro and Ng
both, journalists died attempting to expose the truth. What we are facing today directly is linked what happened then. Some of the same players have been in *'s administration. Ng, I believe was shot down in Mexico? attempting to follow a BCCI trail. These journalists who put their lives on the line knew exactly what was at stake for this country. Drug running and terrorism goes hand and hand---how's that bumper crop of poppies doing in Afghanistan? Intentionally putting drugs on our streets is a direct link to a burgeoning prison population. As Smedley Butler would say, here's a network that would make the mafia look inconsequential.

didn't the so-called "War on Drugs" begin in South Florida in the early 80s when Feds came in and decided to crack down on the gang violence caused by South American drug lords (or drug queen as the case may be have been)? Maybe they realized how much money was involved and the strategy became to take over the drug trade instead of eliminate it.

R.I.P. Gary Webb -- Unembedded Reporter
by Jeff Cohen

Gary Webb, a courageous investigative journalist who was the target of one of the most ferocious media attacks on any reporter in recent history, was found dead Friday after an apparent suicide.

In August 1996, Webb wrote one of the first pieces of journalism that reached a massive audience thanks to the Internet: an explosive 20,000 word, three-part series documenting links between cocaine traffickers, the crack epidemic of the 1980s and the CIA-organized right-wing Nicaraguan Contra army of that era. The series sparked major interest in the social justice and African-American communities, leading to street protests, constant discussion on black-oriented talk radio and demands by Congressional Black Caucus members for a federal investigation. But weeks later, Webb suffered a furious backlash at the hands of national media unaccustomed to seeing their role as gatekeepers diminished by the emerging medium known as the WorldWideWeb.

Webb's explosive San Jose Mercury News series documented that funders of the Contras included drug traffickers who played a role in the crack epidemic that hit Los Angeles and other cities. Webb's series focused heavily on Oscar Danilo Blandon, a cocaine importer and federal informant, who once testified in federal court that "whatever we were running in L.A., the profit was going to the Contra revolution." Blandon further testified that Colonel Enrique Bermudez, a CIA asset who led the Contra army against Nicaragua's leftwing Sandinista government, knew the funds were from drug running. (Bermudez was a colonel during the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua.)

Webb reported that U.S. law enforcement agents complained that the CIA had squelched drug probes of Blandon and his partner Norwin Meneses in the name of "national security." Blandon's drugs flowed into L.A. and elsewhere thanks to the legendary "Freeway" Ricky Donnell Ross, a supplier of crack to the Crips and Bloods gangs.

difficult to get around WHO in 1996-1998 was generating the official storyline fed to the press who used it to smear Webb and deny or downplay the report.
