Poll finds senate challenger gains ground on Voinovich
CINCINNATI - U.S. Sen. George Voinovich remained favored among registered Ohio voters, but challenger Eric Fingerhut gained ground, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The Ohio Poll, sponsored and conducted by the University of Cincinnati's Institute for Policy Research, found that 54 percent of those surveyed favored Voinovich, a Cleveland Republican, while 38 percent supported Fingerhut, a Democratic state senator from Cleveland. Eight percent were undecided.

In a September Ohio Poll, Voinovich was favored by 63 percent of those surveyed, compared with the 30 percent who supported Fingerhut.

Voinovich, a former governor, is seeking a second term in the November election. Fingerhut has been a state senator since 1998 and is a former congressman.

1. Sounds pretty hopeful!
I know, 16 point spread, but it's a lot better than a 33 point spread. With all the attention on Ohio this year, this race will be close.

2. Having Voinovich under 55 percent is good news
Especially since he is a former governor and is seen as a moderate. Maybe this can be the greatest upset of the 2004 election cycle!

3. Doesn't "Fingerhut" Mean "Thimble" in German?
Lot of Germans in Ohio. Maybe that has something to do with his strong showing.:)

4. 16 points is a lot closer than I expected.
I hope it narrows more, though Voinovich is one of the more moderate Republicans out there.

5. Go Pizz, uh' Fingerhut!
What a neat name.

Seems like a huge gap but best of luck to him. I like the smell of democrats upsetting the rethugs in '04.
