The Democratic presidential challenger, Senator John Kerry, yesterday marked the first anniversary of the Iraq war with a fierce attack on President George W Bush, charging that America is "bogged down" in Iraq.

Mr Kerry, who formally won the Democratic nomination with a primary win in Illinois on Tuesday night, came close to blaming Mr Bush for the election of a new Spanish government opposed to the US-led occupation of Iraq.

"The administration stubbornly holds to failed, unilateral policies that drive potential, significant, important, long-standing allies away from us," Mr Kerry said.

In response to Mr Kerry's criticism, Vice-President Dick Cheney accused him of holding US allies, including Britain, "in contempt". He attacked Mr Kerry's Iraq policies, saying that if the Democrat had been president, Saddam Hussein would still be in power. He also condemned Mr Kerry for describing US allies in Iraq as "a coalition of the coerced and the bribed".
