Rollingstone: There He Goes Again! Bill Clinton's Clockwork Bitchiness
There He Goes Again: Bill Clinton’s Clockwork Bitchiness

2/12/08, 1:05 pm EST

Bill Clinton is once again indulging in his ritually bitchy pre-election soundbite thing:

First America was “rolling the dice” with Obama.

Then Obama became “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen.”

Today, the Democratic party’s elder statesman is belittling Obama’s candidacy as nothing more than

Whatever happened to the “brilliant, articulate, compelling vision embodied in Sen. Obama“?

Tim Dickinson

1. Let's see what they have to say when
"smoke and mirrors" kicks their butts in today's primaries.

10. Camp Clinton has already lowered expectations so much for today's primaries
that if they get even 15% it will be a major "comeback"

heh

2. The fairy tale comment...
was about Obama being untruthful in his opposition to the war in Iraq.
Who is the prick Tim Dickinson?

7. Bill has been quiet and they have been losing
so, yes, this was to be expected.

I expect a full line of product rolled out by the Clinton Fun House between now and the end of the week.

8. "smoke and mirrors" is an appropriate remark for stagecrafted candidates
He would say the same thing of any other candidate, like bush, that relies on the appeal of style over substance. I've heard that term used more than a few times about Barack. It's no BFD, and certainly does not rise to the level of calling Mr. Clinton a pejorative term like "bitchy."

What next? Clinton will say Barack isn't qualified and Dickinson starts yelling that Clinton is "over the top with criticism"?
Dickinson needs to grow a thicker skin.

14. The problem is that Bill has been campaigning against Obama...
... like he's Newt f'n Gingrich. An enemy is an enemy when it comes to our former President.

27. Newt Gingrich is the one who had the famous list of words to use.
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 05:10 PM by Straight Shooter
Use the word "liberal" against Democrats, use terms like "family values" and "patriotic" for Republicans. The list is surely available through Google.

I am more reminded of Newt when I hear Obama using the tactic of repetition of words like "hope" and "change" and "unity." Unfortunately, the Repubs still lay claim to "patriot," "God" and "support the troops."

It doesn't have to be true; you only have to be able to make people think it's true.

I don't care whether people think Bill Clinton is the enemy or not. The only politician I really hold allegiance to is Jimmy Carter, and I hold almost as much allegiance to Al Gore, but in his work as a citizen, not a politican. The rest of them are playing the games they play best.

9. Bill speaks the truth
Only smoke and mirrors would convince people Obama is drastically different than Hillary when in reality the are the fundamentally the same and it is debatable who is slightly more progressive.

18. I think you've provided an example of one reason this election is
so important to Bill. Setting everything else aside, he's fast becoming nothing more than a slightly naughty joke to a lot (most?) people. There may be a more generous reassessment to come. Truman was given poor ratings for many years and is now being accorded a lot of respect. But unless Hillary Clinton wins, Bill is going to be faced with more and more snickers for the rest of his life.

23. I have really mixed feelings about the Clinton legacy...
He was president during an era of peace and prosperity, but how much of that was historical accident?

He's a charismatic guy and I want to like him, but even after he KNEW the republican attack dogs were out for blood, he still couldn't keep it in his pants?

In general I think virtually all of the republican smears were baseless (except him being a horn-dog :P ), but dammit, there's a lot there to defend against some of which is sorta kinda true (like the Marc Rich thing).

The fact that even 8 years later you look back on what he did and represented and it's just a big "eh." The only reason he looks like anything close to a great president is that he's bookended by the BFEE, so it's hard not to look good, but dammit, if Clinton had kept his dick in his pants we would have had EIGHT YEARS OF AL GORE.

13. Bill
There is a delicious irony in his using the phrase "smoke and mirrors." This was introduced into the political lexicon by Bush Senior in reference to Reaganomics, back before he sold his soul to the Neocons. It is SO appropriate that Bill is now speaking in such highly establishment terms, since that is what he and Hillary have come to represent. It must frost his ass to realize how irrelevant he has become: a red-faced, sputtering old coot, completely out of touch with the times.

I suppose it was unrealistic to expect him to fade from the scene with any dignity. Dignity has never been his strong suit.

25. clintons take you for granted
after they get MI and FL delegates seated, halt the regeneration of a stale party with youth, independents and white males and sideline Obama – the personification of everything they've championed for decades – they'll laugh, knowing you'll be forced to choose the slightly less warmongering Hillary over McCain. The Clintons have strong stomachs and can live with your hatred and outrage just fine, they've been doing it for years.
