3. Hey, that IS a great idea!
As long as it's done in a non-partisan way, I don't see why a person couldn't hang out with voter registration forms in hand.

The best bet would probably be to check with your state's Secretary of State regarding any questions of legalities. My understanding is that ANYONE can offer voter registration forms to the public, restrictions apply only to partisan politicking.

You probably could NOT, for example, offer a voter registration card in a public government office while saying, "Please register and vote Democratic". You could probably say something like, "Please register to vote and give yourself a voice in your future."

It's a nifty idea, though. Historically, higher voter turnouts tend to favor the Democratic party, so this could be a subtle way of gathering more Dem votes without having to mention the Democratic party.

7. At lease at the city building (library) I work at,
you can be as partisan as you want. We've had the Dems, Women in Black, and an anti-immigration group AT THE SAME TIME in front of our building.

Pardon my joy at this, but--the anti-immigration group was asked to leave.

They were demanding that the library supply them from our own supply with forms when they ran out of them! We obviously couldn't, since they were a partisan group.

5. Shouldn't be a problem--I work for a public library, and
as long as there is no solicitation for money, any group is free to offer petitions, GOTV drives. The Women in Black are out every Thursday, too.

Let's do it!

6. I've tried that. It's not easy
People at the Unemployment office are very cynical. At least, in my experience. However, I wouldn't let that keep you from trying. When I did it, it was a long time ago, and times have changed. You might do better than me.

11. did Motor Voter cover this?
Two years ago I registered with the state job bank. One of the forms was to register to vote, and was listed as required (not required that I register, but required that they show me the form)

12. They don't here
They're supposed to at the DMV and they don't always do it. I think you have to go where the unregistered voters are and that's places like the unemployment office, housing projects, etc. People talk about the disenfranchised, that's them.
