Democrat caucus participants outnumber GOP in Kansas
Huckabee wins Kansas Republican caucus
By STEVE KRASKE The Kansas City Star

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won the Kansas Republican presidential caucus Saturday, trouncing presumptive GOP nominee John McCain.

Huckabee, who barnstormed across the state Friday, led in counties across the state in what will be seen as an upset win.

With all votes counted, Huckabee had 11,627 votes, or 60 percent, to McCain’s 4,587, or 24 percent. Texas Congressman Ron Paul had 2,182, or 11 percent. Other candidates were far behind.

GOP chairman Kris Kobach said the meaning of the results was clear: “John McCain has a lot of work to do to get the Republican Party solidly behind him.”

In Republican-rich Johnson County, Huckabee beat McCain 2,455 to 2,102.

This is a pitiful showing. Absolutely pitiful.

In Wyandotte County, Huckabee defeated McCain 277 to 62.

Republican officials expected about 15,000 voters Saturday, but wound up with 20,009 statewide. While that total beat expectations, it fell short of the 37,000 Democrats who showed up Tuesday to decide between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

1. Don't forget the weather differences this week!
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 07:43 PM by LonePirate
Tuesday's Democratic caucus were held at 7:00 PM in which most of the state was undergoing an ice and snow storm with temperatures in the 20s. Today's weather was sunny and clear with temperatures in the 40s for the Rethugs today. Had the two parties caucused on the same day, either Tuesday or today, Democratic turnout would have tripled or quadrupled the Rethug turnout. If we had a full-day primary instead of a caucus, Democratic turnout would have exceeded Rethug turnout by a factor of five or six to one, if not more.

It's still a prohibitive longshot for either of our two Democratic candidates to take the state in November; but the turnout numbers this week are definitely good news.
