Possible hint at an Obama VP choice?
Since Wes Clark has allied himself with the Clinton campaign,
it's not too likely that Obama will be considering him seriously
as a VP choice, much as Clark would help any Democratic ticket
with Republicans who might find our main candidate too far to
the left, but can't stomach their own candidate.

I got a mass emailing from Obama (as, I suspect, did about 25
million other people) about Bush's SOTU address, mentioning,
in particular, a response by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sibelius.

Sibelius is a pragmatic, no-nonsense Democratic governor from
one of the reddest states out there that is starting to acquire
bluish hues here and there. She is extremely smart, and gives
a hell of a speech. Two midwesterners on a ticket on a ticket
might raise an eyebrow or two, but then Clinton/Gore were from
neighboring southern states, and no one got bothered. Besides,
it would bust the sterotype wide open, even more than having
"one or the other" as a groundbreaker on the ticket.

It may be nothing, but if Obama gets the nomination, he could
do worse for a VP nominee, although the macho crowd who might
have been able to handle the one or the other might be driven
back to their Republican safe haven with a combination of the two.

Remember--as Adlai Stevenson was forced to realize, to his detriment,
"thinking Americans" do not necessarily constitute a majority of
the voters in our country (and even when they do, their votes are
not necessarily counted these days).

1. That's quite a stretch from one line in the email:
"Tonight, Governor Kathleen Sebelius spoke eloquently to the nation on behalf of our party."
He's just acknowledging that her's was the official response.

3. She will be endorsing Obama later this week
But lost of people have endorsed him, and they are not all on the VP list.

5. It sure was a stretch, but an intentional one
As opposed to HRC, Obama has kept any possible VP choices pretty
much close to his chest, and Sibelius has been widely mentioned
as a VP possibility for just about anyone BUT HRC. I was just
wondering out loud if this could be a first indication of something,
or, indeed, nothing more than a line in an email?

2. No strategic value there...
He needs the Western states, and someone to bolster his foreign affairs credentials.

4. I like Sibelius, and I'm from Kansas.
And Kansas is not as "red" as you might think.

But her response speech last night, while hitting some of the right notes, didn't do a lot to excite me. Her delivery was a little too unemotional and her direct appeals to Bush to "join us" to work on Blah Blah, seemed hackneyed after the second one or so.

So, while she might make a good VP candidate, I would rather Obama and/or Clinton pick someone that we will want as President in 8 years, it's going to take 16 years of Democratic rule to fix what's wrong here (if it even can be fixed). We will need a strong follow on.

Kansas Governor Confirms It: She's Endorsing Obama

By Eric Kleefeld - January 29, 2008, 11:21AM

Barack Obama officially has another governor supporting his candidacy. Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who gave the Democratic response to the State of the Union last night, has confirmed to the Associated Press that she is endorsing Obama.

Sebelius' endorsement, which has been expected for the last couple days, coincides with a campaign stop Obama is making today in her Super Tuesday state, in which he will be visiting the home town of his maternal grandparents.

This brings Obama's support from governors to six, compared to Hillary Clinton's ten.

8. Someone from Michigan

That'd be my recommendation. I agree with you and believe Clinton was correct in that a VP should be complimentary to the Presidential candidate. Michigan is right next door, and maybe this would help repair some of the Michigan loss of delegates damage. Maybe Michigan Dems would be happy trading in their delegates for a VP.

Florida we weren't going to win anyway. I love the Floridians on here insisting they were making progress in Florida where they recently lost every statewide election, control over both houses of legislation, and have voted in higher percentages for the Republican candidate in each of the last three presidential elections.
