Chelsea stumps for mom in Worcester

WORCESTER— She has her father’s policy wonkishness without his propensity for long-windedness. And she is as articulate and compelling an advocate for her mother as any parent could hope for.
Chelsea V. Clinton, the only child of New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate for president, and Bill Clinton, the ex-president who wants to be first husband, showed up on short notice yesterday at Clark University during a stump stop for her mother.

On a more serious note, Ms. Clinton deftly handled policy issues ranging from her mother’s positions on global warming to the Iraq war and violence in Africa.
She framed Hillary Clinton’s approach to climate change as intertwined with military security and energy independence, saying that if this country conserves and develops more of its own energy, it will not be as reliant on unstable foreign sources.
“It’s also not good for our security to be dependent on a carbon-based economy that’s dependent on Venezuela,” she said.
As president, she said, her mother would convene an international conference of the biggest pollution emitters, including the U.S., China, India and Brazil, similar to the one former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher held in the 1980s.
On the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan, she proudly noted that Hillary Clinton was the first Democratic senator to apply the term “genocide” to the killings in the east African country.
One audience member who found the younger Clinton’s presentation impressive was Mary Jane Rein, executive director of the Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark.
“Chelsea Clinton was a soft-spoken and extremely effective spokeswoman on her mother’s behalf,” said Ms. Rein, who hasn’t yet decided which Democrat she’ll support. “She kept a packed room engaged across an incredibly broad range of issues, both domestic and international.”
