This news caused a freakish meltdown in Freeperville (as if they ever have another kind of reaction). Not being a Freep voyeur, I didn't even realize they were so ga-ga for grampa. When Hunter dropped out, some of his fans said they'd reluctantly settle for Thompson, but others brooded darkly about voting for a third-party candidate.

We should encourage their belief that the only true conservative on the ballot is the nominee of the Constitution Party or some such. After the Nader follies, it's only fair that the Republican candidate lose some crucial votes from purists who stomp off in disgust and vote for a hopeless minor-party candidate. I mean, we're owed one.
