I have now seen everything
Wal-Mart is being defended on DU.

Seriously, that's it. The Apocalypse is here. Beam me up, Scottie.

1. IMO Wal-Mart sucks
The Waltons are a bunch of bottom-feeding scum sucking pigs. But the reality is there are people, even here on DU, who have to shop at places like Wal-Mart out of economic necessity or because (thanks to Wal-Mart's barbaric practices) they don't have anything else available in their area. Should we draw and quarter them?

2. I've shopped there too. And eaten at McDonalds
I'm just amazed to see Wal-Mart's economic effects on small towns defended.

3. Wal-Mart is 8/10s of a mile from my carporte. Certainly saves on gas
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 07:49 AM by Bobbieo
not to mention lower prices. I can no longer afford to shop at my regular grocery - Albertson's - whose prices have soared way over my budget.

I'm going to be 85 years of age in a few months and will say, without reservation, that the people who work in my Wal-Mart pharmacy are the most friendly and courteous people I have ever dealt with. They go out of their way to be helpful. One of their employees followed me half way down the store to tell me "Yes, they did have my medication in stock".

the walgreens around here, they are very hateful, they take the customer
for granted since they are the only ones open 24 hrs i guess...

5. I might add there are currently 3 supercenter Wal-Mart in my area
and I can certainly tell the difference in mine since their 3rd one opened. There are hardly any customers and this is the winter visitor season, too. I fear that one of them will go out of business and it just might be the one in my area.

They have obviously over expanded, right, which is a sign of the times and will make many DUers happy much to my consternation. BTW - I only shop there for food and neccesities.

11. It's part of the plan
Call it Wal Mart triangulation. They open three and it sucks all competition out of the area. Once all the local businesses are closed, they close one supercenter and the only places to shop are the other two.

Thank you for supporting Wal Mart. China needs the jobs and the Waltons need the money.

I was able to pay off my mortgage in December - instead of Sept 08. Now, I can afford to get necessary repairs to my home and shop at Albertsons once again!!! You do what you have to do to survive in this world!

6. It is amazing. The only thing more amazing will be if
Hillary's "experience" is tied to NAFTA and NAFTA supporters start to come out of the woodwork at DU. ;)

7. I have only been in a WalMart once
Granted, I don't live anywhere near one- the closest is over an hour away, but I'm big on shopping local. I don't shop at ANY food chain- I divide my food dollars between the local co-op and a local grocery store. Yeah, the selection is more limited in many ways, but I'm supporting people I know, not some faceless corporation. Yes, I pay a bit more and I know that not everyone can do that, but I'm also frugal about what I buy. I don't do my hardware shopping or clothing shopping at chains either. Same with books. I'm strictly into buying as local as I possibly can. I haven't set foot in a mall in at least 3 years. I'll try and extend that stretch.

9. Do you generate your own electricty as well?
You should probably think about starting your own religion, being so holy.

10. That might actually be a good idea...
though of course, you'd likely have some Hillary apologist coming at you for not supporting the local privatized utility.

The bottom line is that the woman chose to associate herself with one of the most abusive corporations in America- and the previous adminstration bears much of the blame for tearing down the middle class, and devistating local businesses- while increasing immigration in the process- thanks to its right wing trade policies.

Seems to me that supporting that- or supporting Walmart, makes one part of the problem- rather than part of the solution.

12. Did you fucking get the part
that I live over an hour away from the nearest Wal-Mart. I alos live approx. half an hour from anything like a Price-Chopper or Hannaford. In other words, I live in the sticks. And yeah, I made a conscious decision over 20 years ago to live a certain way. I'm lucky I can do it. And yes, I generate some of my own eletricity through solar panels. I live in a small energy efficient house with lots of passive solar. I have gravity fed water from a spring. But here- I pollute by using wood heat.

13. Good for you!
We should all try to do what we can to support our locally-owned businesses and buy as much as possible of what is made in the USA rather than cheaper Chinese imports.

I think we should all be asking ourselves every day: "Am I part of the solution, or part of the problem?"

I certainly don't think other DUers should be slamming you for trying to do your bit! B-)

16. Thanks. I don't know if I'd be so "virtuous" if it weren't for
circumstance. I live in a very rural area. The nearest town is 15 minutes away, and I know virtually every business owner there. When you're so tied into the local economy, you can't help but have an awareness about how much the local business owners need your patronage. And I feel so lucky that we have an independent bookseller who really cares about books and her customers- as well as a first rate local co-op.
