CNN Poll: Clinton and Obama Barely Edge McCain
By E&P Staff

Published: January 12, 2008 10:50 PM ET

NEW YORK Turnout and excitement in the early 2008 races has been mainly on the Democrats' side, with President Bush's approval ratings still low and Republicans, too, running on "change." A blowout coming for the Democratic nominee in November? Not so fast.

A new CNN/OPINION RESEARCH poll of 1,033 adults, conducted January 9-10, finds Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama barely beating John McCain.

Clinton takes it 50-48 and Obama 49-48, within the 3.5% margin of error.

Other GOP candidates, however, do less well in the matchups, all trailing by double digits.

3. Seriously
Is this the beginning of the setup--the presidential election will be "THISCLOSE", providing the circumstances for the evil ones to get away with voter fraud once again?

4. Edwards
In older polls bested McCain by the widest margin of Dem hopefuls. I am p.o.ed that Edwards gets so little notice.

12. It concerns me that Democrats ignore that fact. Will those who ignore it ...
feel like Nader voters did in 2000?

5. In their dreams.
Who was in the sample that *they* picked? Remember Dewey defeated Truman in the newspapers because they pulled peoples' names out of the phone book when mostly only upper class people had them.

8. I don't get the support for McCain
The Iraq War has support of a bit more the 25% of the people in this country. McCain wants to continue the fiasco indefinitely. So where the hell is his support coming from. His policies are the same as BushCo.

With even the Republicans talking about "change" how come the "No Change" guy is doing so well?

THis is just nuts.

9. I don't get McCain either; he has always backed Bush on the war, has the
war monger Lieberman supporting him, he is 71 years old. The only reasoning I can come up with is they think he is the only one of the candidates that is not a total idiot and has a shot at winning. The media points out the fact he is not a flip-flopper and the public sees that as an honest thing; him sticking to his beliefs.

I agree he would be stronger than the others but don't see him being able to win this thing and besides his strongest point is supposedly the war which is being dwarfed by the economy issue more every day.

13. This support for old man McCain still baffles me
How can he supposedly be doing so well when an obvious majority of the country is against Bush and Iraq? Do the people who support this clown actually know anything about him?

He isn't exactly Mr. Charisma either. I have no idea who the hell this fossil actually inspires.

14. I am really suprised my bf
would support McCain as well , i think maybe alot of americans don't want to get out of Iraq immediately, they want to make sure they won't withdraw in a way that causes more harm for the population, unfortuantely, thats how alot of americans still think about iraq. They are opposed to it becasue Bush is in charge of it.
