The Speech I Gave Tonight in Support of JOHN EDWARDS
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 01:11 AM by Krashkopf
I was honored to be asked to give a 10 minute speech tonight in support of John Edwards at my local (State House District level) Democratic party meeting. They had asked each candidate to send an official representative to speak, but, since Edwards does not have a formal campaign here in Colorado, the local party asked me to speak because I am a pretty vocal supporter. It was exciting. I shared the stage with a local city counsel person who spoke for Clinton, and the 2004 Democratic Candidate for Congress who spoke for Obama.

Thanks to all of the DU bloggers who's ideas have made their way into my remarks. Special thanks go out to jsamuel who I stole "Kumbaya" from. It got a big laugh!

Here are my prepared remarks for anyone who wants to read them:

In his excellent book, The Conscience of a Liberal, Paul Krugman says that a Liberal is someone who believes in institutions that limit inequality and injustice in society. In that sense, I’m sure that all of us in this room are proud liberals.

But Krugman also says that a Progressive is someone who participates in a political coalition that defends and tries to enlarge those institutions.

I am supporting John Edwards, because he is both a liberal and a progressive.

And more than that, I think he is the most liberal, and the most progressive, of the three top tier candidates.

And that is important to me because, after the restoration of the Constitution, I think that the "Corporatization of America" – and the gross inequalities of wealth and political power that go along with it – are THE most important issues facing us, as a Nation - bar none.

We are, truly, in an existential crisis in this country. It is no longer “over the top rhetoric” to say that America has been taken over by a small, very rich, Corporate elite. It’s simply stating the obvious.

With all due respect to Hillary Clinton, and Barrack Obama, I am afraid that both of them have taken too much campaign money FROM the Corporatocracy to bring about the changes necessary to take the Government back from the Corporatocracy and FOR the American People.

And, as much as I like Barack, who is my second choice, NOW is NOT the time to try to build a "Purple America" were Democrats and Republicans work together to find "common ground" on issues.

Today's Republican Party is SO FAR to the radical right wing (having been thoroughly taken over by the "neo-cons and the movement conservatives"), that there is NO WAY to find "common ground" with the GOP without "selling out" MAINSTREAM Democratic principles . . . both “BIG D” Democratic principles and “small d” democratic principles.

As John Edwards said “There IS no common ground between US, and people who would allow a teenage girl to die, because they put insurance company profits OVER her need for a life saving liver transplant.”

The Republicans have tried to strangle Medicare, and to rip down the social safety net that has kept middle class America safe since FDR and the New Deal.

It’s foolishly naive to believe that, come January 2009, we are going to be able to find “common ground” with those Republicans on important progressive social issues like Universal Health Care.

The Republicans are going to fight us, tooth and nail, when we try to implement a truly Progressive agenda. Just yesterday, the President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce pledged millions of dollars from Corporate America to defeat populist candidates, and progressive programs.

That is what we are fighting against. There is no way to compromise with that. Not now. Not in 2009.

I know that we’re all tired of the political partisanship that has divided America since Ronald Reagan was elected, but what America NEEDS now is NOT to reach out to Republicans and have a “Kumbaya” moment.

What America NEEDS is an AGGRESSIVE PROGRESSIVE President who is going to fight back against big business interests to restore the fundemental balance to the American political scene.

What America NEEDS now is an AGGRESSIVE PROGRESSIVE President who is going to fight hard for a truly progressive political agenda that benefits the poor and the middle class, NOT Corporate America, and not the ultra rich.

As a Personal Injury Attorney, John Edwards made a career out of fighting FOR his clients AGAINST large powerful Corporations which were seeking to avoid responsibility for their actions. He fought those fights, and he WON.

John Edwards will continue to fight those same battles for us as President.

Those are battles that are currently being fought against us.

Those are battles that need to be fought by us, and for us.

And those are battles that AMERICA needs to WIN.

And that is why America NEEDS John Edwards as President.

I wish more people would catch on to the truth of it.

But I despair of it happening. When some of the most knowledgable, involved people, such as denizens of DU, can't seem to grasp it, I don't know how the rest of the country will.

GOOD FOR YOU, and good for the Edwards campaign. You really showed guts standing up and reading a speech for your candidate, and you wrote it very powerfully. You are right, this is not a time for kumbaya, these people do not believe in sanctity and peace, they believe in bullying and warfare and bloodshed for profit. Hell, Blackwater gassed our own troops so they could bully their way around Iraq. We need a fighter, and that's what John is and always will be!

Thanks for rallying the troops!

42. The corporate media
Doesn't like candidates who say it's time the media stopped picking our candidates. And that's another reason to support John Edwards. They can't expect John Edwards to kiss their asses.
Soon the corporate media will be as popular as Dick Cheney or anal leakage.

41. This corporatist that James Zogby talked to Thursday at the end of his show...
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 06:16 PM by calipendence
... on the Republican primaries espoused everything that we do NOT want to have happen and is completely counter to what we as Dems want. I think he was from the "Club for Growth" or something like that.

It was interesting to hear him just as fearful of the prospects of Mike Huckabee winning their nomination, who he compared with John Edwards as being "populist". I think their nightmare would be Huckabee going against Edwards, which in effect would leave the corporatists out! That might be when they try to knock on Bloomberg's door and twist his arm to be the "corporatist" third party man they could push.

I think our nightmare is if Huckabee wins the Republican nomination, and Edwards ISN'T the Democratic nominee. Then you might actually have many independents (less concerned about the religious right nature of Huckabee) looking for a non-corporatist solution actually gravitating towards Huckabee instead of Clinton or Obama for populist reasons.

That is why in my book we either have to have Edwards nominated, to negate this "draw" of certain voters, or in the process of negotiating with Obama for Edwards' voters support we have Obama more vocally adopt some of the populist ideals we're looking for to take on the corporate powers.

Otherwise, the voters we SHOULD be getting that are looking for a people-oriented solution than a corporatist solution might actually move away from the Democratic Party to the Republicans, and then that same set of people get stuck with the religious right folks polluting judicial nominees, etc. too.

In either case, whether it is for the nomination itself, Al Gore entering a "split convention" that we be more likely with Edwards staying in the race, or Edwards being hard-nosed about negotiating a more progressive platform from one of the two other candidates before backing out is what makes him continuing his campaign absolutely essential!

the research I;ve done in the last two days, which you can find on DU,
Obama is the worst of the corporatists.

I will write John's name in for President if he's not the candidate but I will never vote for Obama nor Hillary - both two sides of the same coin.

on his website in South Carolina, and I dont see why not in Nevada, Michigan, whatever state we're in.

And your letter is excellent for that.

Have you sent it in to your local paper?

Do you mind if I borrow?

Thanks so much.

PS - if you google Harpers Magazine and Obama you will find a listing of who Obama has taken lobbyist money from. You'll be shocked to know US Chamber of Commerce Donahue, National Assoc Of Manufactueres, Business Roundtable, the very organizatons representing the multi-national corporations who have outsourced millions of American Jobs and factories !!!

Obama also wrote and passed a bill restricting our recourse in the courts in class action suits for irresponsible companies who have caused injury to consumers like the very insurance companies and product companies. large multi-nationals that John has taken to court. The business community has been after stopping us from suing for years - and it took Obama to fulfil their dreams, at
American citizens expense.

Somehow I dont think Obama is the populist he now pretends to be since he has seen how the American people responded to John. John Edwards is setting the issues in this critical election !

There's only one person who is sincere about returning America to the people and that's John Edwards !!!

as I was beginning to think I was alone is seeing Edwards as our only hope against the status quo. Thanks for putting words to the almost visceral feeling I have about Edwards being THE candidate of the moment...and the visceral feeling I have against the 'purple America' rhetoric. 70. And This Is WHY I'm So DAMNED Frustrated... THE MAN Who Is Called
the "angry" candidate is saying to the American people what NEEDS so desperately to be said!! And yet, ONCE AGAIN we are letting BIG MEDIA DICTATE to us what THEY want US TO HEAR!!!

THE MEDIA can't STOP long enough to take a breath to look around and see "this man" who is talking OVER AND OVER about "we the people" and they give him only enough time to squeak his message here and there... then right back to HYPE!!

I thank you for speaking up for him, I thank you for pointing out the OBVIOUS, I thank you for "trying" to let his voice be heard! UNFORTUNATELY, most of the American public LISTENS to THE MEDIA and WHAT THEY WANT! They want to "tell us" AGAIN who the F--K to vote for! I'm so SICK of it, so very SICK of it!

The manipulation is so immense, the glory of the moment OVERWHELMS sensibility, and for all the screaming about what THE MEDIA DOES, it seems the VERY PEOPLE who complain DAILY about THE MEDIA are buying precisely what they are selling!! Actually frustration doesn't come close to what I'm feeling about this election! I have ALWAYS supported the Democratic candidate, the nominee of the Party, but this time around, if the wind is STILL blowing like it is, I'm just "opting out" and I'm going to run away from this front loaded crap and say "I'VE FINALLY have had enough!" I can't take this insidious NONSENSE anymore! I just find it REPULSIVE!

And I don't care what ANY of you here say to me about hair, houses or hedge funds! LOOK, just LOOK at what the other candidates have and what they have done! But THAT isn't going to happen because of the vicious nature of far too many DIVIDED people, just here at DU! Edwards IS NOT perfect, NONE OF OUR candidates are... but John Edwards is telling you he wants to fight against those things that are hurting the ordinary person! I KNOW he won't be able to achieve everything he wants... NO President I ever have seen has done it, but at the VERY least he says he wants to try!

Call me every name you want, I really don't care because elections today are NOTHING MORE than "popularity" contests, and THAT popularity is determined by THE POWERS THAT BE, IMHO!! It makes me feel like I'm back in high school or something, and the football player and the prom queen always get crowned.

So vote for who you want... I AM! And because we have those "wonderful" machines that STILL have quirks in them where I live... what the hell does it matter WHO I vote for??? I support John Edwards and that's it, I will stand my ground and not get sucked up in the "spin cycle" ever again!

That's my .99 cents, because .02 cents just doesn't come close to squat anymore!

Night, Night, I'm running away to bed, because I'm a bad bad person and a COWARD to boot!! So some will say! TA, TA and Tootles!

Could you tell if you made any converts?

Great speech! Thanks for your efforts! Are you going to run as a delegate?

74. Thanks
I fired up the Edwards people, and had most of the Kucinich people were nodding in agreement. Not surprisingly, some Clinton and Obama supporters thought I was too devisive.

I don't know how many people I converted, but the district chairperson did come up to me afterwords and tell me that she was probably going to support Edwards on 2/5!

I am toying with the idea of running as a delegate, but the Edwards campaign is writing off Colorado (they don't even have a formal presense here), whereas Clinton, and especially Obama are organizing it like crazy.

75. Please post this reply in the DU Edwards group. We all need to be aware of the
circumstances in Colorado!

Thanks again!

76. I'm encouraging people to caucus for Edwards. I'm bummed there is no Colorado office!
He needs all the delegates he can get, so if we can get enough people to caucus for him, it's all to the good.

If you have any ideas of any Coloradans who could help my effort with buttons, literature, and especially bumperstickers, please PM me and let me know!

Thanks!!
