How FABULOUS is it that Iowa elected a black man?
I am still in awe, that my America, after the bullshit of the last 7 years, wants and yearns for a leader, a man who can help us, regardless of his color, but will inspire the rest of the world?!

How fabulous! I'm a happy camper tonight!

1. Totally.
I mean, even having a Black man as a serious candidate was not on anyone's radar 4 years ago...

Amazing. :D

112. You and me and a whole world of people of every color, race, and a multi cultural polyglot nation
are giddy with joy and hope that we are finally finally finally past something as silly as racial bias and onto electing someone who can inspire the good in all of us. I too e-mailed his speech to my friends and family (who are almost exclusively MORMON). I waited till no one was looking last night and did a little dance which looks a bit like a washing machine gone awry, hoses flying and waddling across the floor, but joyful anyway. Hope is something I have had in short supply lately and it's just good to have even a little to make the future seem not so damn bleak. I hope the rest of the nation is as inspired by Barack as I am. He brings out the best in all of us.

It's actually kind of entertaining sometimes to watch them spin around like a top, making complete fools of themselves.

Other times it's like being cornered by an obnoxious drunk at a Frat Party.

It really depends on your mood. And theirs.

105. I want you toknow that even tho I was supporting either Edwards or Biden, I do understand your
feelings. It hurts to come so close and then get slapped in the face by the voters of Iowa. But the fact that younger voters and women voters turned out so much for Obama means that change is in the air and that can be very good for women. This is not necessarily a bad thing, altho you certainly can't be feeling it that way now. We shall see what will happen. Until then, keep your chin up and keep fighting for what you believe is right!

I try to be thoughtful in my responses, but not if the catalyst is something that I find so devoid of thought or care or intelligence that I feel compelled to show my scorn.

61. I'd sure welcome your input in the Feminists Group.
I'd also like to see you representin' in a thread where the usual DU misogynist crowd is in full force. Supporting women means more than just advocating for the election of one (and a very privileged and elite one at that) to the highest office.

Margaret Thatcher, Condoleeza Rice, and Ann Coulter, to name a few, are all women. Do you think they enhance the status of women in the world?

BTW, I don't agree that men have destroyed women. Not by a long shot. We're here, we're strong, and we pick the candidate we believe in.

I guess it's nice. One of the minor reasons I secretly would like to see him take it to the House. However, I hope he opens up the next weeks and actually talks about the issues in detail, not political morse code.

74. It isn't about Iowa but about the whole country.
We've slid way back on "race" and mostly because the Republicans use it as a wedge -- as if it had no consequences for real people.

Tonight was a GREAT counter to that. Iowa did just great! :)

86. Despite all of the DU claims that a "white" state like Iowa...
wouldn't vote for a non-white candidate, Iowa is probably more progressive in that respect than many states. There are still a lot of good old fashioned Liberals in the Upper Midwest, who grew up respecting the Civil Rights movement and have waited for this opportunity. Most of the country doesn't understand this region and tends to lump it in with the Midwestern Bible Belt states.

I'm really interested in seeing what kind of response Obama gets in the other parts of the country. Will he automatically have support from Latinos or Asians, for example? Will there be white voters who have lived with diversity long enough to just look at him as a candidate, rather than an African-American candidate?

I agree with you, Caseman: now it's time for him to actually describe his plans instead of relying on "HOPE" and "CHANGE."

7. Well in honest response to your post, I don't have any kind of racist card to play...
The only thing that I want from any candidate is serious change, no mater if they are yellow, black, white, or purple... Just show me your cards and get this huge, huge job done if and when you get to the Oval office... And please don't forget the destruction and deaths that have been caused by this previous Administration.... You need to hold them accountable one way or another... Hand them over to the UN to do your dirty work, I don't care... But be sure they do not just walk away from there million plus caused deaths and who knows how many trillion dollars pissed up against the wall in the name of the American Tax Payers.....

Best of luck to whomever....

26. Why is it so fabulous?
Hillary's all well and nice... but she's to the right of moderate. If that's what you're looking for, then vote thusly. I mean, what's up with that vote to name the Quds force a terrorist organization, when it's a part of a State Military? That's not a terrorist organization, it's a military organization. It seems to me that that sort of pandering to the right of moderate opinion is what's costing Ms. Clinton.

And that's why 'not that woman'. When Barbara Boxer runs, that's a different story.

Meanwhile, a black man who seems to be a little more consistent, and hasn't decided to take the liberal wing for granted... and who manages to get a state's primary win... well that's exciting! I, for one, have had enough of spineless democrats afraid of possible attacks from the right wing... so afraid that they try to make their positions and voting record "right" enough to make it hard to decide if they aren't themselves right-leaning.

and don't anybody dare to bring up that crappy excuse about Reid's son working in Hillary's campaign. Every senator, other than McCain and Obama, showed up to vote. Obama? Too busy campaigning in NH and then a couple of days later has the gumption to criticize Hillary for her vote. I guess that it's great to vote present, to abstain from voting (MoveOn ad) or to not even bother in showing up for the vote than to take a stand on an issue. It takes balls (or ovaries) to actually make a decision.

As for Barbara Boxer, I like the lady just fine but she couldn't get elected in a GE. She's too far to the left for the country at large.

21. Some delegates were won tonight, NO ONE was elected to anything.
C'mon folks, there are 49 of these place you have to win delegates in..and THEN you have to get more voters to vote for you than the opposition can hide or destroy the ballots for, THEN you have elected someone. Yes, Obama came in ahead of two pretty tough cookies and one or two far better qualified people never made the cut, and that is worth a short grin, before going back on the trail and running the race. Which is pretty good metaphor as Iowa caucus is more a race to the starting line than anything else.

GET BACK TO WORK FOR EACH OF CHOICES! We need the very best candidate, and the vast majority of voters in November if the repugs are to be prevented from finishing us off, once and for all.

btw the reported delegate count fro tonights caucus is 14 Obama 13 Edwards 12 Clinton. and it will take around 1400 to get the nomination!

Black folk have been brilliant, gifted, talented, hard-working, highly qualified, etc. for centuries. We were just never allowed to fully participate in the American mainstream. Obama is nothing new in our community. America is just starting to notice. :-)

23. How SICKENING is it, that people think Iowans are racist?
Same crap we heard on CNN, and even from Bill Maher on Letterman. It's no big miracle that people in Iowa don't judge people by their color. People on the coasts need to get it through their thick skulls that people from the Heartland aren't all a bunch of redneck members of the KKK. :grr:

I keep pointing out that I attended an integrated grade school IN IOWA in the 1960's, but went to Massachusetts for grad school only to find those good libs rioting to fight integration of schools there.

Keep your stereotypes to yourself.

just like there's a difference between California and Nevada, or Florida and Georgia.

If Obama won rural Indiana I'd be more impressed.

The term "The Heartland" is actual pretty misleading. Perhaps it's the Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish heritage in the Upper Midwest that makes us quite a bit more progressive.

I believe some of the religious extremism that is overtaking the country was originated in Souther California after the 1906 quake, and when I was at Berkeley, one of my neighbors was an office for the John Birch Society.):

we can forget about winning the White House, again.

And, by the way, the Democrat caucus goers of Iowa tend to be like that. I participated in 1988 and Jesse Jackson had a very good showing in my precinct.

Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 09:29 AM by EffieBlack
He can't:

1. mention he's black (although white people can refernce his race all they want);

2. Mention civil rights or endorse any controversial civil rights measure;

3. Suggest that black people still have a harder way to go in America or indicate he believes that his own suiccess is not conclusive proof that racism and discrimination no longer exist in America and the playing field is now perfectly level;

4. Do or say anything that provokes "white guilt," such as taking anyone to task for making racist comments or mentioning any unpleasant facts of history such as slavery or segregation (unless invoked to to show that America has conquered all of its racial ills);

5. Appear to have any respect, regard, or affection for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton - even though they paved the way for him, he should act as if he's never heard of them and distance himself from them at every opportunity.

In other words, if he wants to avoid being accused of "running as a black man," he'd better not give any indication that he thinks he is one.

I wish it wasn't so, but with a middle name of "HUSSEIN" and

HE didn't pick his middle name, so what's the deal? He lived in Jakarta? So? I've been to Indonesia 15 times in the last 12 years; I'm not Muslim. What does that actually mean? He was young, went to a school. So? You're making mountains out of molehills before even Hannity has a chance.

89. What's really cool is that they have embraced his message of change.
This was the message that Kerry didn't get out very well in 2004.

We must change directions in this country.

I think that what George Will said tonight is true - Americans have grown beyond the argument that discussed the color of a person's skin or the gender of a candidate to be a leader in this country.

And I'm no George Will fan at all, but on this I agree with him.

We're all Americans, and it's time for us to pull together as Americans and face the problems that Bush has created for us in order to solve them.

We can't just "stay the curse" for "4 more years, 4 more years".

I hate that chant.

109. I think it's a very good thing
Obama doesn't have the experience or the skills to be anywhere near the Presidency. But I do agree that it's good that a black man wins a primary campaign especially in a heavily white state, though I think someone here said Jesse did it earlier.

I've said here elsewhere that most of America is finally culturally ready for a black man as President.
I'm not worried about it anymore. It will happen soon enough with or without Obama.

I do think that a woman as President is going to be much harder. That's one reason not to miss this chance for Hillary. That and that she's probably more ready to be President than anyone I've seen since Bush Sr twenty years ago.

It's too bad they both had to come in the same election, but there's no doubt that Hillary is better qualified and skilled for the job.
