New Hampshire Attorney General Releasing Preliminary Results Of Probe Of Romney Mormon Calls
New Hampshire Attorney General Releasing Preliminary Results Of Probe Of Romney Mormon Calls
By Greg Sargent - January 3, 2008, 3:34PM

That's what the New Hampshire attorney general's office has just confirmed to us.

The AG is about to start a press conference, we're told, at which the AG is going to announce preliminary results of their probe into the source of those now-notorious calls raising negatives about Mitt Romney's Mormonism.

The calls became a big issue in the New Hampshire GOP primary, with some politicos charging that John McCain was behind them, while others suggested that someone connected with Romney himself was doing the calls, perhaps to test negatives about his Mormonism or diffuse it as an issue.

The results of the probe could have a major impact on the NH primary, but it's unclear as yet what the AG has found. More as we learn it.

1. Good, I hope it sinks McCain some if he's found guilty.

3. I think they'll trace it back to Mittens somehow. There's supposedly
a big scandal waiting to break on Monday about Mittens from the Huckabee camp.

6. Both McCain and Huckabee have a vested interest in seeing Dudley go down.
McCain is going to pull a "South Carolina" on anyone that gets in his way.

7. You'd think it'd be to Huck's benefit to release any info before tonight.

8. Not going to happen: New Hampshire Anti-Mormon Push Poll Probe Won’t Wrap Up Until After Primary
NEW HAMPSHIRE ANTI-MORMON PUSH POLL PROBE WON’T WRAP UP UNTIL AFTER PRIMARY
by Associated Press
Thursday, January 3, 2008

CONCORD, N.H. — The New Hampshire attorney general’s office said Thursday it doesn’t expect to identify those responsible for a series of anti-Mormon phone calls that targeted presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and his faith before the state’s primary.

Attorney General Kelly Ayotte issued a brief report just five days before New Hampshire voters go to the polls. In it, she pointed to two firms: Western Wats, of Orem, Utah, that made the calls; Moore-Information Inc., of Portland, Ore., that hired Western Wats.

The attorney general’s office says it determined Western Wats conducted the poll, developed its content and set the dates for the poll to be conducted in New Hampshire.

The attorney general’s office then sought out-of-state subpoenas of Moore-Information to explain its role and who hired the firm as a middle man. Moore-Information has claimed it was hired to do the work for the primary, which is exempt from state laws that ban such polling.

4. Press conference is over according to this:
http://www.boston.com/news/local/politics/primarysource/2008/01/just_days_from.html

CONCORD, N.H. -- After being legally stalled in an investigation into illegal phone calls involving the presidential race, the New Hampshire attorney general called a press conference this afternoon asking the public to provide tips.

Just days five days before the state's presidential primary, Attorney General Kelly Ayotte wants anyone with information as to who employed Moore-Information of Portland, Oregon to conduct a poll in New Hampshire, in November to call her office. These calls were considered "push-polls" because, according to state law, they falsely claim to be for independent research when in fact they are linked to campaign activity. Push-polls are traditionally used to spread a negative message about an opponent, true or not.

These calls under investigation came to light on Nov. 16 when both the Mitt Romney campaign and John McCain campaign notified the attorney general's office about calls spreading a message about Romney meant to be damaging.

The investigation has involved law enforcement in Utah and Oregon, Ayotte's office said.
