Speculation mounts of Bloomberg presidential bid
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg may simply be promoting bipartisanship or he may be plotting his own independent presidential campaign.

Either way, he is drawing media attention amid the hotly contested party nominating battles for Iowa and New Hampshire by becoming the star attraction at a January 7 meeting of Unity08, a bipartisan group that believes the Republican and Democratic parties are out of touch and unduly influenced by special interests.

Bloomberg's spokesman denied speculation the billionaire mayor was going to the meeting at the University of Oklahoma to promote a potential independent, self-financed run for president.

<snip>

Former Republican candidate and current Rudy Giuliani supporter Steve Forbes told CNN of Bloomberg: "He's itching to do it. ... Unless something extraordinary happens, I expect him in the race."

1. Just when there seems to be a real delineation of candidates in
both parties, out comes a johnny-come-lately like this. It should be mandatory to make your intentions known at least as few months before the first primaries. Late entries like Bloomberg confuse our view of candidates and their positions. This will serve as another "Nader" split of the vote.
I really find it insulting that someone with all the money in the world to pay for it, will enter this race at such a late date. No hardship, no travel all over the country giving speeches and raising money. No time facing the public to make your position known. Can we really afford that?

Maybe we do need a third party, who knows. If we have one, it should be conduct itself within the same time frame as the current campaign.

2. LOL! How DARE he inconvenience the two major parties!
He has no RIGHT to upset the carefully-controlled R/D applecart! Seriously, if the Dem nominee has a great message and is a solid and inspiring performer (Obama), Bloomberg will not be a threat--may even be a blessing in stealing Pub votes.

9. Unfortunately, Al Gore Is Not Running
and the candidates we have will have a very difficult time winning a 3 or 4 way race.

6. That's bloomberg's prerogative..
We'll see who has the lucky stars or unlucky. Being president isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

8. The election laws in all 50 states do not allow independents
to participate in the primary process. Maybe if the two parties had election laws which did not discriminate against third parties, people like Bloomberg could enter according to your schedule. BTW since when is entering an election 11 months beforehand considered "a late date"?

7. Forbes is more than a supporter of Dame Rudy,
... he's his 'financial policy' advisor. Said so on CNN or MSNBC yesterday ...

Geez I wish these people would be required by law to identify their candidate-affiliations.
