Poll question: Who would make a good running mate to Clinton, Edwards, or Obama?
Edited on Sun Dec-23-07 10:06 PM by FlyingSquirrel
I know I'm jumping ahead but it's fun.

Assuming one of the top three wins it and DOESN'T choose another one of the top three for a running mate: Who should they choose? And why?

I'm not including Gore since he has stated publicly he wouldn't consider being the 2nd on a ticket.

1. I chose Richardson because:

He helps with the argument that there is no executive branch experience on the ticket, and helps deliver the Hispanic vote. And has few negatives that I've heard about.

2. Clinton the nominee:
Clark or Richardson.

Clark would be fantastic. Has the education, training, experience in all areas of planning, and much more.

Considering age difference for longevity: probably Richardson. He does have foreign experience, appeals to many different groups, could have a large influence where we go with Mexico/border problems and much more. Also, he is a westerner for balance.

4. Richardson has been the best governor
New Mexico has had in my memory. He can replace Pete Dominici in the senate next year if he decides to run for that seat.

5. Clinton/Clark -- he's already endorsed her and I think he's strong enough
to be her VP because Bill would be a BIG presence in a Hillary WH.

Obama - Barbara Boxer.

Edwards - Webb.

Just my personal feeling on it -- nothing concrete.

Do you think he WOULDN'T?

21. gately, Wes Clark has
already had a big influence on Hillary; much of her fp and iran/iraq stuff is FROM Wes, and I suspect that had something to do with his endorsement of her.

(I know this stuff from observation, being a student of Wes for years.)

35. Clark was my 2nd pick after Dean in '04
His liberal credentials are trustworthy, for a mainstream candidate anyway. Brings the military background to the table, to ward off attempts to smear the ticket as "unpatriotic." Nice looking man too. I'm assuming he'll be Hillary's VP which would be fabulous, but if Edwards squeaks in there Clark would be a good choice for him as well.

Obama can run with McClurkin for all I care.

10. Yes, Wes Clark would be the best
vice president for any president.

Quixote, why would it be 'too late?' There is no requirement that a vice president be running for president, or had run in the past, or anything else except that he/she is qualified to hold the office of President should that become necessary.

15. I considered adding Clark, but
Edited on Sun Dec-23-07 10:04 PM by FlyingSquirrel
I wanted to keep down the number of choices so I stuck with those currently running.

I think if Kerry had chosen Clark he'd probably be running for re-election right now.

Having said that, there's something about Clark that just doesn't seem right to me. I just don't really trust him - feels like he's hiding something about his true nature.

OK, I've added Clark since so many have put him down.

23. Funny, he's the only one who I fully trust.
He's the only one who never has been afraid to tell me what he really thinks even if it wasn't popular to say so. Clark has never run from his past - he owns up to every minute of it, even when it hasn't always been popular to do that either. Clark is the guy who got up on a stage with Amy Goodman, who had not always treated him kindly in the past, and allowed her well over an hour in front of a live audiance, with cameras roling, to ask him any question that she wanted on any topic - including the war in Kosovo. Clark always gave full and direct anwers, nothing got ducked. I was in that crowd and it was an amazing event to witness. The thing is, he never talks down to an audiance. He assumes you have a right to know not only what he thinks but why he thinks it, and he tries to explain that in detail. I saw him in New Hamphire deliver a talk in a church basement to a peace and justice group. It was a world class briefing on security issues facing the United States in Asia and the Middle East, with details that a Congressman would be lucky to hear at an arranged pentagon briefing. Clark believes in participatory democracy and knows it requires an informed electorate to work.

I've met Wes Clark on numerous occaisions by now. The man is genuinely enthusiastic to see grassroots activists and bloggers who he knows in attendence at any event he goes to. His warmth is not feigned. To be blunt I look like an aging hippie, I have no political connections, but Wes always makes a point of greeting me personally. Clark attended Yearly Kos twice and mixed with everyone who wanted his time while he had time to give. He has live blogged on several sites numerous times and he always fields all questions himself. If you have any doubt about where Wes Clark stands on anything, he's written three books so far which lay it out, and he maintains a web site with a huge archive of tapes of him speaking live and unrehearsed in multiple settings. Wes Clark is hiding nothing from anyone.

28. I think Obama would accept an offer from Edwards
And I think Edwards would accept an offer from Obama. I think Clinton would not accept an offer from either, and I don't think Edwards would accept an offer from Clinton. Not sure if Obama would. But this poll makes the assumption that none of the three will be offering the position to either of their two top rivals (it simplifies things, creates an interesting discussion and avoids flaming.)

27. Interesting....
There are a lot of Biden supporters on DU so it makes sense that a lot of people would choose him in this poll. Here's what's interesting to me however. In the latest informal poll of DU'ers for presidential nominee,

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3880163&mesg_id=3880163

as of this writing,

Biden received 13% support
Richardson received 0% support
Kucinich received 14% support

but in this poll for VP candidate (so far),

Biden at 35% support,
Richardson at 27% support,
Kucinich at 4% support.

One would expect a much higher level of support for Kucinich and a much lower level of support for Richardson. What's up with that?

31. Hmmm...
Biden or Dodd? Two Senators on the ticket? Um... no.

Gravel? Kuch? No way in Hell.

Richardson? His lack of debate skills and appeal hurts his chances greatly.

HRC as a Veep? Don't count on it.

Edwards? See HRC. A very slim chance with Obama.

Obama? Maybe.

Clark? Only for HRC.

Any other ideas?
