WASHINGTON — Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has found a unique champion in her quest for a third term: Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the former Democrat who just seven years ago was that party's vice presidential nominee.
Collins, facing a challenge by Democratic Rep. Tom Allen, asked Lieberman for his support, and Lieberman announced in April that he would endorse her. Since then, he has raised money for her campaign in Hartford, Conn., and in Washington, D.C., and contributed $10,000 from his political action committee.
Lieberman has become a pariah among liberal Democrats for embracing President Bush's policies in Iraq. When he ran for re- election in 2006, he lost Connecticut's Democratic primary to an anti-war candidate, then won the general election after he dropped his party affiliation and ran as an independent.
Lieberman's involvement in the Collins-Allen race underscores its national importance, as Democrats try to increase their majority in the Senate. Maine, Minnesota and Oregon were won by the Democratic presidential candidates in 2000 and 2004 but are represented by centrist Republican senators.
