John Edwards: A Lifetime of Fighting for People

Dear Iowa Caucusgoers,

Fourteen years ago, we were just a normal family with a healthy 5-year-old daughter, Valerie. Then on June 24, 1993, our world changed forever.

Valerie was playing in the local wading pool when the powerful drain suction at the bottom of the pool almost sucked the life out of her.

In the terrible days and weeks that followed, the only words we wanted to hear from anyone were, "I can help Valerie." And then we met John Edwards.

John took on the irresponsible manufacturer of the defective part and we learned that she wasn't the first child to be maimed and even killed by this company's absolute indifference, but they hid the truth.

In our darkest hours, John Edwards gave our family hope. And then he walked into that courtroom and have that irresponsible company hell, and we won.

John ensured that Valerie's medical expenses would be taken care of for the rest of her life. And he helped change the ways companies do business to make swimming pools safer for children.

We are so thankful that today, Valerie is much better, and we hope every day for her future.

John talks about the heroes he has met in his life, but to us, he is the hero. He has the courage to take on the toughest fights - and win. And he will always have the thanks of a grateful family who gave hope to in their darkest hour and helped ensure their child would have a chance at a better future.

Sincerely,

Sandy and David Lakey

p.s. We know you have an important decision to make, not just for Iowa, but for the rest of this country on January 3rd. We know that John Edwards is the best person to lead this country and we hope you will agree.

1. It's no Oprah, or Babs, just people, and that's who has the power.

2. I read this, and tonight I watched a video that was unlike any I'd ever seen..
And I read the comments of his supporters and watch the way he runs his campaign. I remember why I worked so hard for him in 2003. He's really come a long way, matured a lot over the years..(and I was crazy about him then)..and I just think "Merika" gets it, and I think John Edwards "gets" America.

8. I met this family today.
I also met James Lowe. James is the gentleman who didn't speak for 50 years due to the lack of health insurance. He spoke today. He spoke from his heart and he spoke for me.

Both the Lakey's and James Lowe are the REAL celebrities of this campaign. Bless them for standing up and showing us the REAL John Edwards.

Below is a photo of Sandy Lakey from today's event. Her words brought tears to my eyes. You can't tell from this photo but there were hundreds of people packed into the room. Valerie Lakey looked like an average teenager. The difference is this....Valerie never feels healthy. She is in pain daily. In spite of this, there are times when she is happy.

John Edwards gave this family hope and he gave the corporation responsible for Valerie's injuries hell.

If there were any undecided voters going into the event today, I'm sure they left knowing who the right candidate is. America needs John Edwards.

11. Thank you for sharing that -
Edwards connects with people, real people, and I see more and more people believing his sincerity and that he's genuine. I do so wish I could be in Iowa, you are so lucky to be a part of this. I am prepared though, after he gets the nomination, I'm going to be pounding the pavement for Edwards here in North Carolina. I will do what I can,

Thanks again! :yourock:

13. I know I am lucky.
I don't take this for granted either. I really wish all Edwards supporters could be here. There are still 2 weeks...can you come? The campaign office will find you housing. Seriously.

I have never been more moved by a speech. Hearing John Edwards speak right now, in person, is magical, inspirational, educational and emotional. It is a life changing experience.

He is closing his arguments. Sealing the deal. And he knows how to close.

14. I sooo wish I could!
If I had a job that would allow as well as a bank account, I'd be there in a heartbeat! I'd even take my First Grader, he's a enthusiastic Edwards supporter too - even recognizes his voice when he hears it! Thanks though, I am so there in spirit!

9. I talked to a very good friend of mine tonight. She and her husband both hold PhDs, but both work
by choice in what would seem to most "menial" jobs. They are two of the happiest and most lovingly cerebral people I know. Rabidly progressive, they turned off their TVs months ago and never turned them on again. They couldn't bear it. I keep her updated via frequent emails, but she literally cannot stand what has happened to our country. I asked her today if she knew anything about what was going on with the primaries. That too, she had tried to tune out because they both saw and heard nothing but the inevitability of a Hillary nomination. She had been afraid to call me because she assumed I would be supporting Hillary(I did, at first)and she didn't want to hear about it. She didn't really like Obama either, but couldn't put her finger on why. Most of all, she said, she just wished that "Edwards had a chance." I assured her he had huge support, and had a chance to place very well in Iowa. I heard something in her voice then that I hadn't heard in months. It was Hope.

12. Hope is what we need -
Thank you - It's nice to know that those not "in the - so called - know" are pulling for Edwards. I think the media is going to be caught with their pants down after Iowa.
