Obama Called Out Ted Kennedy: "You're Getting A Little Old...Get Some Spine"
Watch the cocky Hot Shot Obama in Action...

"But back when he was an Illinois State Senator in 2003, Obama himself was thirsting for a fight. And when it came to a prescription drug bill being considered by Congress, he was willing to call out even Sen. Ted Kennedy, the liberal lion, for not showing enough political backbone."

"We've got to call up not just Republicans," said the Illinois Democrat, "but we got to call up Ted Kennedy and say, Ted, you're getting a little old now, and you've been a fighter for us before I don't know what's happening now, Ted get some spine and stand up to the Republicans."

38. Hurling insults at a Liberal Lion of the Dem Party is
not very democratic and perhaps Obama didn't have time to read that Bill that he's complaining about.

IIRC.. there was a safety question of "quality" of the prescription drugs that were not guaranteed in that bill. Sure the price for prescription drugs would be lower but there were no regulations in place spelling out standards for inspections and enforcement.

106. Kennedy is far more gracious and professional than you
Here's Kennedy speaking, three years after your AFL-CIO tape (12/06):

WALLACE: For all of the excitement about Barack Obama, there's also talk about his inexperience. They said the same thing about your brother John back in 1960. Do you see any parallels?

KENNEDY: Well, first of all, my brothers are my heroes, and they're in a category by themselves. But Barack Obama is talented.

I think when you look at — I went to an interesting conference that looked back on presidents, and the historians talked about not only their legislative achievements but also their character, their ability to inspire. Abraham Lincoln, one term in the Congress of the United States and certainly one of our greatest presidents. President Buchanan had been in the Congress 10 terms, had been in the Cabinet, and one of our worst presidents.

They all come back to the question, then, of character, their sense of vision that they have for the country, their sense of purpose, and their ability to inspire a nation.

It seems if we come back to a different, perhaps, judgment, in terms of all of the candidates, the Democrats will have the best candidate. And we have every intention to win. The fact is all of them, whether you take Obama, Hillary, Chris Dodd, they're all better than our Republican friends.

47. right...
Sure I agree, Obama is not a great candidate. But neither is Hillary.

Obama may have "called out" Kennedy on standing up to the re-pukes (and I love your quote mining to find that one) but Hillary's leadership in the senate on progressive issues has been anemic and muted at best.

69. Obama, he really screwed up this time!
Senator Edward Kennedy is the foremost respected, admired and the go to guy/ U,S Senator by BOTH parties.

You see, Obama will implode. Save your money folks. The media wants him, the GOP wants him to will because he is still wet behind the ears. The GOP will knock him down to size and ultimately the Democratic Party will be completely perceived as weak.

21. I just watched the clip
Ted Kennedy is quite possibly the current patriarch of the liberal movement. Like many, he was rocked back on his heels by the whole mileu of those days in which neocons were rampant and seemed to have great public support. This was not an admission of defeat but a strategic withdrawl. Perhaps it went on over long ...

It is by no means inappropriate for a younger fighter to call the elder back to the front lines ... and that is basically what the Obama dude was doing.

I doubt Obama can take any credit for this but Ted has found his backbone, and I assure you the fire in his belly burns yet. But in scary times, even the lion hearted must be reminded from time to time that they are brave, and their courage is needed. If that gives you offense, then I cannot understand.

I doubt seriously Mr. Kennedy took any offense at all ...

77. And that's how you say it?
'You're getting old - get some spine.' One Dem to another in a public venue?
One small Dem to a very respected, lifelong-accomplished and revered Dem, in a public venue?

You think that's OK? You seem to, characterizing it as good, wholesome Obama, the young turk, just bolstering the elder statesman to stay strong.

I think an interpretation of Obama as a classless smartass for whom dirting his own for personal rhetorical advantage is SOP, rings alot truer to the words as they were spoken.

is just Obama nobly trying to "summon the best" out of him.

Oh my. Sure it is.

I don't think even you believe that. I think that this is just the level of distortion that Obama supporters have to employ to keep the Democrat-smearing Obama in good stead as the apple of their eyes.

The rest of us however, have started to see Obama for the punk-ass bitch that he is.

At that time, Kennedy was willing to give up a lot to the Republicans, particularly Medicare Part D. Obama called him on it. Standing up to even a Kennedy is something I admire if giving up too much is at stake.

70. Golly, Old Ted should tell Barrie to scrape together some semblance
of a conscience and show up to vote on these important issues. And not just 'present'.

74. That's why I can't stand Obama. Arrogant, cowardly, self-righteous fraud.
The day Ted Kennedy needs lectures on having spine from a coward who won't show up for the tough votes is the day this party died.

Screw Obama.

75. Getting a little old? Get some spine?
That's the kind of thing I would say here on DU. But I'm not holding elective office. It's rather snarky, for a politician. I don't have a problem with someone in his position mixing it up; indeed, it's a refreshing glimpse of someone with some sand, and pretty far removed from his 'politics of hope' schpiel.

But you know, it's quite a contrast with his attitude toward Lieberman. I haven't heard Obama lecturing Lieberman yet. Maybe I missed that soundbite. And his good friend Joe Lieberman is not fit to lick Ted Kennedy's arsehole.

81. THIS VIDEO IS FOUR YEARS OLD! HELLO? ANYBODY HOME???
Last I checked, Kennedy isn't correct ALL the time. No Child Left Behind ring a bell for the kiddies?

Obama was talking about Kennedy caving in to the Medicare section that would create the donut hole in fulfillment. Was he correct? Yes.

100. What I want to know is where this came from
The first mention I can find of it is in an editorial in the conservative Boston Herald on the 17th. Then this "exclusive" video shows up on the Huffington Post the next day. Interesting.

Some nobody (and yes, BO was a nobody not long ago) gets all rightous and 'fired up'.
4 years ago, who cared?
4 years on, BO's past looks evermore spineless.

102. Yeah, she did. See you found this also......
No, not about Ted Kennedy's spine (he does have back problems).....but about that medical bill:

http://www.womenspeecharchive.org/women/profile/speech/index.cfm?ProfileID=65&SpeechID=358

MEDICARE/PRESCRIPTION DRUG LEGISLATION - NOVEMBER 19, 2003
Mr. President, I will now turn to the other issue we are confronting in the Senate. I don't see how we can deal with a Medicare bill of this significance at this time when, so far as my office knows, we still do not have the final bill as I came to the floor. We will have a lot of explaining to do to our constituents. Every Member hoped we could get a bill to provide a prescription drug benefit for our seniors. They need it and they deserve it. I wish I could support this bill. Analyzing what we are able to find out and what the likely impacts will be leads me to conclude that not only will this bill not deliver on the promise of a drug benefit for our seniors but it will mean the slow, but steady unraveling of the Medicare system.

Oh, and gee, check out where I found that.......

97. When debating the FMA, Kennedy was the only senator who said he's FOR gay marriage
Not just against the Federal Marriage Amendment. We wouldn't have had a single senator stand up for full gay equality that day, if it wasn't for Kennedy. And Obama seriously thinks he has more backbone than the much more liberal Kennedy?

He isn't fit to shine Kennedy's fucking shoes when it comes to "standing up to the Republicans."

Who does this guy think he is, he has NO RECORD to compare to Kennedy.

He just went WAY down in my eyes.
