DES MOINES -- Drawing a full house to a downtown convention center, Oprah Winfrey campaigned for Barack Obama in this crucial
early caucus state today for, she said, the same reason she believed the audience was there. "Because I care about this country," she said during a 50-
minute rally attended by as many as 18,000 people.
Winfrey also mocked pundits who have speculated about her possible influence on the Democratic nomination. "Despite all the talk and speculation
and the hype I understand the difference between a book club and a free refrigerator -- that was a nice refrigerator," she said, referring to prizes on
her show. "I understand the difference between that and this critical moment in our nation's history."
Oprah fans and Obama supporters filled the vast hall, wearing "Got Hope" T-shirts and carrying signs saying, "Change we can believe in."
The candidate's wife, Michelle Obama, introduced the speakers. Winfrey took the stage to loud cheers and spoke for about 20 minutes. "I came here
because I deeply believe in America," Winfrey said. "Let's dream America anew again by supporting Barack Obama."
