Poll question: How does Oprah's confession (I voted for as many Republicans as Democrats) afffect how you view her
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 08:03 PM by antiimperialist
I am writing about an interesting fact that I was unaware of: Oprah Winfrey has voted of as many Republicans as Democrats in her life, as reported in CNN today.
Some may argue that political independence calls for choosing a candidate without strings attached, and see this as normal. Others may argue that voting for any Democrat instead of his Republican counterpart in the last 50 or 100 years would have yielded much better results, and Oprah's judgement has to be called into question.

Does this revelation by Oprah make your view of her improve, decline, or not change?

Does Oprah's confession to have voted for as many Republicans as Democrats change your opinion of her improve, deteriorate, or be unchanged?

2. My opinion of Oprah is not particularly positive
so this fact doesn't affect me one way or the other.

However, I'm glad she's supporting our candidate in this election.

5. It makes me doubt the progressiveness of any candidate she is pushing for. nt
Let's face it big-media is her money machine and she is of the investor class-low tax rate.

It might be interesting to see how she structures her income to minimize taxes.

I respect much of what she does in terms of charity but I prefer the super-rich who vote lopsidedly Democratic or Progressive.

6. I wouldn't go that far
I don't think we can transfer Oprah's virtues or flaws to the candidate she endorses. This would constitute a fallacy called 'guilt by association". Let's not forget Murdoch raised funds for Hillary.
Obama may be using her for practical reasons.

26. Yes, anyone who can appeal to voters beyond the 30% liberal base isn't good enough.
With an attitude like that we're sure to win in November!

7. if you asked this before last November
It would have some relevance.
but ask this Now, when so many of those Democrats turn out to be lazy or ignorant or complicit sots... that act like repluglicans...

but after November, when those democrats who promised change of direction, sit back and lick bush's ass as thirstily as they do, call him a lovely man, give him more pocket change for turning people in pink mists in far off lands...
I would be embarrassed to criticize Oprah about sometimes voting for republicans. thoroughly ashamed.

17. Honest? It could also mean that she voted for 100 Republicans and only 1 Democrat for all we know
and she could still say she voted for as many Republicans as Democrats.

http://www.newsmeat.com/billionaire_political_donations/Oprah_Winfrey.php

94.8% Blue
5.2% Red

Not a spotless record, but pretty good.

15. It's possible that she has always voted Democrat, and lied
Probably thinking that independents are more credible that democrats or republicans.

she said it for political effect, thinking it would further dramatize the "importance" of her endorsement.

11. How people vote is their own business
If she didn't say it, I never would have known it. I never even watch her show, so my opinion either way would be limited. I do admire what she's done for books. She's been goddamned wonderful about Katrina. She's not Donald Rumsfeld. She's not Ann Coulter. I can't get really exercised about how Oprah votes.

Because it did not surprise me much When you have billions and enjoy buying $100,000 hand bags and $10,000 shoes then getting ever more tax cuts has to be a goal.

14. Makes me think that as a swing voter, her liking a candidate helps
It would have been great if she would have supported Kerry in the General Election last year. A venue for reaching that many unaffiliated voters in an informal way would have been great for John and Teresa Kerry.

It also means more to get the support of someone very independent - it means nothing when Barabra Steisand, for example, endorses the Democrat - who else would she pick?

28. That was to soften Swartzenneggers image with women. He was accused of fondling
a host of female co-workers. Herself, a former victim of abuse, Oprah did her best to help undo the damage to his reputation.

She's not a morally evil person, just not a very deep or comprehensive thinker. I have no understanding of why she is so influential.
