Edwards Outlines Plan to Help Students Pay for College-
Thought this was good information. If college is in your future, or that of your children, this is important to know.

Dec 4, 2007 -- Ames, Iowa – As part of "Building a Better America" week, today Senator John Edwards will discuss his plan to tackle student loan debt and make college more affordable. Edwards was the first in his family to go to college and is running for president so that all young people have the same opportunities that he has had. He believes every young person who is willing to work hard, should have the chance to go to college.

At a community meeting in Ames, Iowa tonight, Edwards will outline his plan to make college more affordable for millions of students through a national College for Everyone program that will pay for one year of public college for students willing to take a part-time job. He will also discuss his plans for reforming student loans to eliminating bank subsidies, making applying for financial aid easier, and expanding access to college counselors.

"In America, every child should be able to go as far as her God-given talents and hard work will take her," said Edwards. "As the first in my family to go to college, I know that our system of public education should be our sturdiest ladder of opportunity.

2. I was talking with some friends the other day about this program
It's great to be able to talk about the real detailed plans that my candidate has for when he is in the White House.

4. How come those damn Europeans get public education through university?
How is that possible? After all, we have been told over and over that our system is the best that there is. How come they can afford universal healthcare, public education through universtity level, generous old age and unemployment pension benefits, subsidized public transportation systems that work and get you from A to B? How come they don't seem to have to incarcerate 1 in 37 adults and yet still manage to have a reasonably safe society? Why does the United States totally suck? Where did we go so wrong?

11. Because they spend on social programs like we spend on war.
If you cut the Pentagon budget down to levels comparable to European powers or even Russia's level, you'd free 500 billion/year right there to invest in schools, infrastructure, universal health insurance, job training programs, excellent mass transit, tuition-free university, etc.

12. What a half-assed idea
One year? Uh, John? College is usually four years. And what part-time jobs qualify for the support? How are you going to ensure there will even be jobs for them to take?

John Edwards, looks and sounds good on the soap box, but bad for America when in an executive position.

John Edwards is the candidate for real Americans. This is a wonderful idea, in contrast to some who have NO ideas except how to benefit corporate cronies.
