Edwards thrives on love of family, justice, South
WASHINGTON — John Edwards could be Richard Kimble of The Fugitive. Or more accurately, the lawyer who could have saved the wrongly accused Kimble from having to roam America year after year in search of justice.

The successful TV show, which aired on ABC from 1963 to 1967, caused a ''building fury'' in young Johnny Edwards week after week because ''no one ever bothered to take Dr. Kimble's side and make things right for him, or even try,'' Edwards would recall decades later.

Of course, Johnny Reid Edwards also recalls being equally ''fanatical'' about Perry Mason. But the longest-running lawyer series on television offered comfort at the end of each episode as Mason, played by Raymond Burr, extracted a dramatic witness-stand confession from the real killer.

But without The Fugitive, Edwards might never have embarked on this, his second campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination for president. Because at the age of 11, at the height of the TV show's popularity, Johnny Edwards chose the profession that eventually would lead him into politics.

4. Nothing wrong with loving the South
He can love the South and still hate its flaws. Many liberal Southerners have felt that way, from the beginning.

2. Good article, things I didn't know about
It was interesting. He certainly had a lower middle class back ground.....laying carpet certainly isn't for wimps. Loved the article, and I now want to read his book.

3. The book Four Trials is wonderful.
I recommend it highly. Elizabeth's book, Saving Graces, is equally wonderful. Both books give insight into what motivates them. They are inspiring.

5. It sounds like it from reading the article
I can see why he ran for public office after Wade's death. And, I can see why he is running the way he is after Elizabeth's bout with cancer, and now her continuing coping with cancer. I think he ran in 2004 the way he was told to run, and now he's decided to run the way HE wants to run. I truly think he is running the show this time around. He does seem to learn from his mistakes.
