Sen. John Edwards brought his campaign to topple John Kerry back south Thursday, telling an Atlanta crowd he wants to debate the Democratic presidential front-runner "right here in the state of Georgia."
"We ought to debate wherever and whenever the state of Georgia and the people of Georgia want us to," the North Carolina senator told cheering supporters at Clark Atlanta University. "This election is too important. The people of Georgia deserve to hear what we have to say."
Edwards finished a close second to Kerry in Tuesday's Wisconsin primary. He is pitching himself to voters in the March 2 Super Tuesday primaries, including Georgia's, as the only remaining alternative to Kerry, despite winning just one state so far — South Carolina — to Kerry's 15.
He didn't specify Thursday that he is seeking a one-on-one debate with Kerry. But campaign spokeswoman Kim Ruby later said that would suit Edwards just fine, and that's how Kerry's campaign interpreted the challenge.
