There is nothing wrong with letting McClurkin perform at the concert, and Obama should say so. You have to invite people in in order to change hearts and minds. McClurkin will be playing at an event in support of a candidate that supports gay rights issues to the fullest. There's even going to be an openly gay minister opening the event. I think it's great Obama is reaching out and trying to change hearts and minds.

It's the same kind of "I won't talk to them" mentality that Bush uses with foreign policy so many on the far left seem to be ready to embrace with domestic issues. We need to reach out. We need to grow.

Was the Human Rights Campaign out of line sending this letter to Bush, demanding he not let McClurkin play the 2004 Republican convention?

Was Bush trying to be inclusive, or trading on hate for votes? Can we afford this much of a double standard?

11. The difference is the Republican party does not support gay rights issues.
The Democratic Party and Democratic candidates do.

20. I acknowledge your point, but isn't that WORSE, not better?
A gay person already knows the pugs hate him. McClurkin appearing at the pug convention is par for the course.

What does it say to a gay person when a top tier Dem does the same.

Does he or she feel more or less abandoned?

I figure Bush can do whatever offensive thing he wants. But we have to have a higher standard, because people depend on this damn party.

WE are the line between gay Americans and ghettos and re-education camps. WE have an obligation here.

Obama's actions are pure poison, and that is my sincere opinion. If Clinton did this I would say the same, word for word. Truth be told, I like Obama more. (I support Clinton because it was obvious to me that Obama would melt-down in a real high-stakes election.) So this genuinely tears at me because this guy who was supposed to be different is EVEN WORSE.

Really nice.

Yup, this is an opportunity for "education" doncha know. Seems more like an opportunity to raise more money out of a certain group with the basic line, "Who else are you going to vote for" in the background. Obama is not my guy and I have tried to stay out of the fighting but this is just too much. The support for his decision here on DU makes me ill.

33. Thanks...it's from a Michael Franti song.
Is Love Enough

We want freedom of speech
But we all talkin' at the same time
We say we want peace
But nobody wants to change their own mind, no they don't

So it goes on and on and on and on and on
For a thousand years, a thousand years I say
And it goes on and on and on and on and on
What language are your tears, are your tears

Everybody wants to live the life of kings and queens
But nobody wants to stay and plow the fields
Everybody wants to tell their neighbors how to live
But nobody wants to listen to how they feel

And it goes on and on and on and on and on
For a thousand years, a thousand years I say
And it goes on and on and on and on and on
What language are your tears, are your tears

But what I got to say right now
Is love enough yeah, love enough yeah, love enough,
Or can you love some more
Is the love enough yeah, love enough yeah, love enough
Or can you love some more
Is your love enough yeah, your love enough yeah, is your love enough
Or can you love some more
Is your love enough yeah, your love enough yeah, is your love enough
or tell me can you love some more

It goes on and on and on and on and on
For a thousand years I say
And it goes on and on and on and on
What language are your tears, are your tears

What mother nature gives
Mankind refuse to let live
Taking the universe in their own hands
Oh lets stop short-circuiting the positive
Charging the negative
Causing the most unusual circumstances
Everyday we rise again but our love will fight again
Hoping that hearts will receive our love token
Blessed words we speak again
Lovely words to do my friend
For us to live in this here garden of eden

So tell me is your love enough, yeah, your love enough, yeah, is your love enough, or can you love some more
is your love enough, yeah, your love enough, yeah, is your love enough, or tell me, tell me, tell me, what's it...

What language to laugh in
What language to cry in
What language to dance in, make romance in
What language to make love in, or pray to the above in

What language are you fears
What language are you tears

An amazing song from an amazing man.

McClurkin is the enemy. The people who espouse that bigoted "ex-gay" crap are the enemy. They are on the wrong side of this issue and they are to be defeated. There's nothing to talk to them about. They represent bigotry, period. It makes as much sense to try to talk to them as to reach out to the KKK.

This "reach out and talk to them, gosh maybe we can change their minds" bullshit is extremely naive, to put it mildly.

43. I don't care about Obama. But, I do care about people making up new labels to stick on...
anyone who disagrees with them.

Out of what orifice did you pull "exclusionists"?

Why aren't the homophobes who want to stamp out gay rights "exclusionists"?
Why isn't Hillary an "exclusionist" for keeping people out of her events?
Why isn't Kerry an "exclusionist" for refusing to defend the guy who got tasered.

How much crap does someone who doesn't agree with you have to eat to avoid this
dreaded label?

My point is that this word adds nothing to the conversation except another brickbat.
It is another exercise in replacing meaningful distinctions and honest reactions
with manipulative, black and white rhetoric.
