Republican Party is Quieter Than a Church Mouse
As Democrats and civil liberatians tear their hair out because of the way this White House is flaunting the laws and violating our civil rights, the Republican Party is mostly quiet on the subject. Democratic activists criticize Patrick Leahy for attempting to subpoena White House aides. They are totally turned off from the lack of inaction by the new Democratic "majority".

However, it is not just the White House that needs to be held accountable, it is the Republican Party. And the Democrats can do nothing so long as the Republicans are permitted to "stonewall" these important constitutional and privacy issues. As it now stands, we will have to wait until a Democrat is in the White House before the Republicans wake up. Then, we shall see how dedicated they are to our privacy rights and the need to hold the new White House accountable.

How do we hold these people accountable to our laws? First of all, we need to ask each and every Republican running for the White House if they think this Administration is doing anything that might violate our Constitutional rights? We need to ask Fred Thompson and the others what they think about Guantanamo and the use of torture? We need to ask Mitt Romney and the others what they think about eavesdropping and our rights under the Fourth Amendment?

We need to ask Senator Arlen Specter and Senator Trent Lott if they agree that this White House has the right to withhold this information from the Congress? We need to put these Republicans on the record before they go any further. We need to ask them what they think should be done? This is a job for our press and our reporters. At this time, our press is not doing its job.

Otherwise, this Administration will continue to backhand anyone and everyone that might challenge their right to withhold information from the American people. They and their Republican Party seem to have forgotten that they work for us, the American people. They do not work for a political Party.

Our anger is misdirected by simply criticizing the Democratic leaders. They can do nothing so long as the Republican Party chooses to be quiet on these important privacy issues. And these Republicans will continue to be quiet so long as no one asks them about it. It is the Republican Party that must be held accountable, not just this lawless White House. Otherwise, we are wasting our time and energy simply criticizing the Democrats.

It is time to redirect our focus and look at the bigger picture. We are about to have an election and we don't even know where any of these Republican candidates stand on these important issues. Isn't it past time to find out? These Republicans cannot be permitted to slide any longer. They must be forced to take a stand and to publically state their positions on torture, eavesdropping, spying on Americans, warrantless wiretapping, withholding information from Congress, ignoring subpoenas, and the role of Congress in matters of war. The Republican Party continues to betray their oath to uphold our Constitution and we cannot, we must not, permit that to go on any longer.

1. Another question for Arlen . . .
Excellent post, by the by.

And Mr. Specter needs to explain to the American people just why he went along with the vice president when Mr. Cheney forbade him from issuing subpoenas. What part of "co-equal branch of government" mystifies Mr. Specter?

2. Well, we have been yelling at them for some time to STFU..
I'm considering protesting at the local repuke headquarters. Bring posters with photos of their handiwork...Iraq, Katrina, collapsed bridges, dangerous coal mines.... They own this shit-pile they have created!

If it is illegal to join up with Al Queda, it should be illegal to practice republicanism as well.

Tell 'em to shape up, or get out of town!:patriot:

3. Two points
First-who will ask them this? The MSM? Not likely.

Second- compare how they have acted and how the Democrats acted during the early years of Vietnam. A sitting President was forced to pre-emptively turn down the nomination of HIS PARTY.
