Well known for his reforms in the rough and tumble arena of Illinois politics, Barack Obama promises to bring that same dedication to national reform as he introduces a comprehensive package to fight corruption and “special interest driven politics”. Obama has already taken strong steps in this direction, introducing and co-sponsoring some of the toughest ethics reforms legislation to date. He introduced legislation to create a separate federal commission to receive ethics violation complaints. His Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act would require the disclosure of every earmark 72 hours before approval, and a disclosure on the amount lobbyists spent promoting earmarks and the names of the lobbyists. He teamed up with Senator Feingold to “require lobbyists to disclose the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars they raise from clients and friends and deliver as sheaves of checks.” He even teamed up with Senator Coburn, a very conservative Republican, to create an online search engine that would allow people to track government spending.
