Both gave answers that favored Civil Unions while opposing same sex marriage. But Richardson gave a better answer. Richardson was smart enough to do two things. One he brought up more popular parts of the gay civil rights movement. Two, he gave a justificiation for his stance that both permits him to change his mind (people get ready for it) and not get trapped by why do you let religion affect this public policy but not others. Edwards' answer is a problem in both regards.
Clearly as a matter of public policy I would prefer our candidate to support marriage equality. I also think it would be better politically. But we could elect Barney Frank and we wouldn't pass marriage equality in the Congress. Most of us realize that. But how candidates address this issue matters to us because it helps estimate just how much they would be willing to stand up for gay citizens. Failing that we need to hear in clear unambigious terms that a candidate will fight for us. Richardson's answer coupled with his record demonstrated that.
I still haven't made up my mind between these two candidates and Richardson needs to explain the maricon comment, but his record is great. Edwards is great on some other issues and apparently coming around on this issue. I would imagine that more than a few gay people like me will be watching the LOGO debate with great expectations. In the meantime, Edwards could learn from Richardson here.
