I just returned from a "town hall" meeting in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles held by our super wonderful best in the world congressman Xavier Becerra. No member of Congress, and I mean no member of Congress is as intelligent, articulate, compassionate, educated, you name it -- every positive quality in the world as Representative Becerra. (Check out his website.)
http://becerra.house.gov/HoR/ca31/homeDuring the question period from the crowd and the crowd response, citizen after citizen let it be known that he or she wants impeachment of both Bush and Cheney and wants it now.
Unlike most of Becerra's district which includes some pretty poor areas, Eagle Rock is middle class. More toward the lower, working class end of the middle class than areas in Pasadena or on the West Side of L.A., but not poor. It has good housing, good schools and is a peaceful, great community. The grade school auditorium in which the event was held was packed. You could tell that some of the audience consisted of the usual community activists, but there was a large contingent of just ordinary folks. And the enthusiasm for impeachment even from shy older ladies was just astounding.
As I was leaving, I spoke to a woman with a Spanish accent who told me her only son, her only child has been stationed with the Navy in Iraq since February. With tears in her eyes, she told me that he had joined because he wanted to get an education.
Becerra voted against the war authorization bill in the Fall of 2002. I think he was shocked by the number of the calls for impeachment and the insistence of the audience on the need to impeach now. He explained that Congress has to choose between getting the things it wants to do done and impeachment, and that he favors getting things done. The audience reminded him that he had just been telling us that the majority in Congress can't get things done because it does not have the votes to overcome a veto so why not impeach. Becerra also stated that there are not enough months left before Bush leaves in which to impeach him. After the crowd had gone and a few of us remained to thank him for his work, Becerra explained to someone talking to him that the problem is that, when he goes back to Congress and tells his colleagues that his voters are pounding him on impeachment, his colleagues from southern states and states like Indiana tell him they are being pounded on issues like immigration.
OK YOU GUYS IN THE SOUTH AND INDIANA. YOU'VE GOT YOUR WORK CUT OUT FOR YOU. We have done our part. You need to carry your weight and start "pounding" on your congressmen and women. PLEASE PLEASE SAVE OUR COUNTRY.
