I just had another email read on CNN by Cafferty...
Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 07:14 PM by jenmito
The question was, "Who will the American people ultimately hold responsible for the failure of the immigration bill?"

And I answered, "Bush will be held accountable. He angered his base and got the RW radio hosts telling their audiences to call their congresspeople. They did and the bill went down in flames. Memo to Bush: When all you have is your base, don't get them angry.

Jenny
Nanuet, New York"

(Then Wolf commented on my email saying the person who wrote Bush shouldn't anger his base when his numbers are so low was smart and they discussed it).

Not a big deal, but wanted to share. :hi:

A question... I responded to the same question but wasn't around to see if he read it on the air. Is there a way to check and see if he read it? Do they send you an email or something?

Did you also check the "read some of your responses" link? They post some other emails that weren't read on the air. I had one posted there a couple weeks ago...

"If the U.S. leaves, will Iraq become a "terrorist Disneyland"?"

I wrote,

"No. And they won't follow us home, either. Before the U.S. invaded Iraq, terrorism was not a problem in Iraq... It will not become a "terrorist Disneyland" if our troops leave because the Iraqis don't want them in their country anymore than we want them in our country. The Iraqis will fight 'em there so we don't have to fight 'em here. -Jenny, Nanuet, New York"

37. No, I didn't even make it that far! :-)
I wrote something to the effect of we won't leave until the President orders it, and that won't happen with a Republican president until the transnational oil companies stop owning the GOP. It was much better written, but I didn't save it.

Hmmm... probably should have posted in the DU right afterwards. Oh, well.

26. Actually it's just the opposite....
If Bush had done the things earlier in his presidency that WOULD have angered his base, he would be a very popular president right now. Let's make a list of them:

--refused to invade Iraq, thereby saving millions of $ in taxpayer funds now going into the pockets of Halliburton et al.;
--appointed smart, accomplished, fair minded Supreme Court justices rather than ideologues who are also sexist, and logically challenged;
--taken a strong stand on hiring the best qualified people regardless of religious or political background;
--come out strongly pro abortion rights, saying he sees no need to change Roe v. Wade and won't consider it further;
--kept the budget balanced by not giving huge tax breaks to zillionnaires, involving us in Iraq, etc.

and so on. Yeah, his base would be furious, but the majority of voters in this country would cheer him on.

It's too late now for him to make a credible U turn.

Here's the exact exchange:

BLITZER: That one e-mailer said, you know, when the president alienates his base, he doesn't have a whole lot left.

CAFFERTY: Yes.

BLITZER: That was pretty wise.

CAFFERTY: Well, and it's true. Remember, he got the right-wing radio talk show hosts, you know, beating the drum on this thing and urging their listeners to call their senators and representatives, and these people did.

And I think maybe, for a change, the politicians were listening perhaps more to the voters than they were to the special interests and the corporations that tend to hold sway and exercise a great deal of clout and influence on issues such as this.

After all, big business is the one that wants this cheap labor in the country.
