Not that I'm surprised at that. He pronounced it "VLAD-oh-meer". It's "Vlad-EE-meer". And, with Russian names, you are NOT supposed to refer to colleagues by their first name only. That's mostly for close friends. It should be name + patronymic, i.e. "Vladimir Ivanovich". Raisa Gorbachev got pissed off for the same reason when she visited Bloomies in NYC. The press was calling out "Raisa!" It should have been "Raisa Ivanova" (or whatever).

Condi Rice, who has a PhD in Russian Studies, should have told * this years ago.

Let me demonstrate. You are male and your father's name is Alexander. Your "patronymic" name is "_ (your first name) Alexandrovitch"

If you're female, and your father's name is Dennis. your patronymic name is "_ Denisovna".
