FORT MADISON — Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards on Friday criticized Congress’ approval of the war funding bill, saying ‘‘Washington has failed America.’’
The former North Carolina senator said lawmakers had a mandate as a result of the last election, ‘‘and that mandate was to stop this war.’’
‘‘What they should be doing now is sending the president a funding bill that supports the troops, but that bill needs to have a timetable,’’ Edwards said in Fort Madison, beginning a weekend trip through southeastern Iowa.
Lawmakers should have repeatedly pushed for a timetable, even if President Bush vetoed each measure, Edwards said.
‘‘It is the only way to force this president to do what the American people want him to do,’’ he told about 100 people gathered in a hotel conference room.==
