John Conyers officially endorses Obama
I heard Conyers speak at a meeting in his district yesterday. I was there promoting our Draft Gore efforts. In addition to a congressional update, Conyers announced that he is officially endorsing Obama. This was not a big surprise by any means, but when I heard him speak a couple of months ago he was wavering between Edwards and Obama.

Another thing of importance he said is that the judiciary committee will never vote to bring the articles of impeachment currently proposed against Cheney by Kucinich to the floor of the House. He said we need to concentrate on taking back the White House and other important things. Impeachment would bog us down too much and keep us from getting the other work done that needs to get done. Basically, he said that impeachment proceedings will hurt us more than help us, and we don't have the votes in the House to get it to the Senate for trial.

Also, Monica Goodling will be testifying and has been granted limited immunity. She will need to tell the truth because she will not be immune from perjury charges if she lies. Conyers says they know a lot already and will know if she is lying.

2. What he says is no doubt true, but it is not the reps' job to get re-elected.

It is their job to file impeachment against those who perpetrate crimes against the Constitution and against humanity and the world's environment.

10. It wasn't his own re-election he was talking about
It was taking back the White House and our government.

3. Thanks for the recap, SharonRB.
Good news about Goodling; that should be real interesting, and I don't think she can afford to stonewall, nor does she have the practice Gonzo did.
RE: impeachment, that's a major disappointment.
As for Obama, I'm still undecided but will take Conyers' selection under advisement. Maybe if he changed his impeachment stance I'd even seriously consider it!

6. I also wish that the idiot criminal could be impeached,
Edited on Sun May-13-07 04:42 PM by mahina
but Conyers' point is the same one my very progressive representative has made to us in Honolulu since 2003. I have to say if Pelosi, Conyers, and Neil Abercrombie are telling me it's counterproductive at the present moment to persue impeachment, that means something to me. It would feel really good to see him impeached. But I think they are laying the groundwork for a different wardrobe for Mr. Bush; I think he would look fantastic in a nice orange jumpsuit.

My .02, and thanks for all your good work.

7. To me, that's the only reason to not pursue impeachment, which
is to lay the groundwork for criminal charges which can be brought long after
Bushie leaves the White House. Let us hope they aren't planning on giving this guy a free pass; that would not be good for democracy.

8. I'm in the same place you are
I'd love to see them impeached, but I'm going to trust Conyers, Pelosi, et al on this. I don't want to spend time on something that is counterproductive either. I just hope that once they are out of office, we can try them for crimes committed while in office. I'd rather see them in jail after they're out of office than just thrown out of office, but not brought up on criminal charges. If that's what can happen eventually, I'm perfectly happy to wait it out. I just don't want to see them go unpunished.

11. You're welcome, Sister
:hi:

After seeing Obama on Stephanapoulos today, he has moved up a bit in my book, but I'm still holding out for Gore. If Gore doesn't run, I've been leaning toward Richardson because of his experience, but Obama really does impress me as a person. He comes across as very honest and forthright. I just wish he had more experience, and I'm not 100% convinced he can win in the general, which is the most important thing to me.

13. That's one of those choices each of us has to make on her own.

I went to the first organizing rally here for Senator Obama yesterday, and I have to tell you it seemed like there were more people there than even came to the Oahu county democratic convention. WOW. Such great energy, so much fun. People in my neighborhood who aren't even democrats want to help, greens on one side and republicans on the other. I really have a lot of hope that he can heal this country, and I think he is the best heart, mind and voice for the hope that is still America for me since RFK.

I have lots of aloha for President Gore. I was honored to address him as such when he came here last, at a rally for John Kerry. From the expression when he heard that, not for the first time even that day I am sure, I know he is well aware of the crimes that kept him from office. Thinking about what we've lost in the last 6 years is too sad for me on this beautiful Sunday. But it is so real.

Aloha.

14. You are so right, Mahina
Or what we've lost in the last 2 and a half years, without Kerry. Either way, we've lost a lot. I had the pleasure of meeting Kerry last summer at a small fundraiser for Gov. Granholm. What a wonderful man! My real dream would be a Gore/Kerry ticket, but I know that is not to be, no matter what. It would be a karmic event to have them both at one time to heal the country and the world. An unbeatable ticket, in my book!

As long as Gore is still in the picture, I'm glad I don't have to make up my mind on someone else. There's time and I'll decide when I have to.
