"Rudy McRomney is not a conservative." --Republicans turn on each other

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- When it comes to Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment -- "Thou shalt not speak ill of thy fellow Republicans" -- GOP presidential candidates seem to be losing their religion.

Republican candidates have been speaking a lot of ill -- sometimes quite directly.

"Governor Romney, his views ... have been moderate to liberal in North, in the Northeast, and it's all on videotape," former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore said on "The Situation Room" recently. "And now he's trying to shift to be a conservative."

At a Republican dinner in Iowa this month, Gilmore took on his party's front-runners collectively, saying, "Rudy McRomney is not a conservative."

The former Massachusetts governor's response? He said his rivals -- Sen. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani -- have changed their minds on issues, too.

And talk about speaking ill of a fellow Republican, President Bush is not off limits:

"We all know the war in Iraq has not gone well," McCain said. "We have made mistakes, and we have paid grievously for them."

1. This is exactly why so many of us in the South on this board
are so worried about Fred Thompson.

Sure, Fred is more moderate, but his being from the South gives him the appearance of being the type of conservative that these Republicans seek.

Fred scares me. If he jumps in, then we're going to have a horrid up-hill battle in the purple states.

2. Speaking of appearance ...
If any of their candidates starts to appear wearing a white sheet we will know that they have finaly gotten their act together and settled on that "right kind" of conservative.

5. LOL.
That might be funnier if it didn't ring of some truth (although, I know quite a few old-fashioned conservatives who aren't racist).

3. They don't want a "conservative".

I doubt you could get ten Repukes together and be able to establish a consensus on just what a conservative is, any more.

No, they want a daddy. A stern daddy. Once again, for such a thing, they are willing to turn to...an actor.

Republicans: Everything they know about The Government, they learned from "Father Knows Best".

I dare say they could probably find their dream president in a Bear Daddy bar. They are just to afraid to take that first step and walk into one.

4. I can agree with this and that maybe a more accurate
description of what Fred Thompson represents to them.

Good analogy.
