Bloomberg Anti-Gun Campaign To Air Ads

By GRACE RAUH
Staff Reporter of the Sun
April 19, 2007

Mayor Bloomberg's nationwide campaign against illegal guns is taking to the airwaves, with the launch of a targeted television and Internet advertising campaign aimed at shaming Congress into repealing an amendment restricting access to information about guns used in crimes.

Flanked by New Jersey mayors and police officers at City Hall in Jersey City yesterday, Mr. Bloomberg said it was a coincidence he was announcing the ad campaign and the addition of 27 new mayors to his coalition two days after 32 people were shot dead at Virginia Tech. There are now 214 mayors in the coalition.

The tragedy is a terrible reminder of what can happen when guns wind up in the wrong hands, Mr. Bloomberg said. He noted that violent crime is on the rise throughout America.

2. Well, that's nice, but it won't help him much for winning crossover 'Pugs, if he runs.

7. I can't see a compelling reason for a Dem to vote for him, since he is
very Dem-leaning to begin with. Not exactly the "conservative alternative" for GOPers either. Who would serve as his base?

4. Good question.
Bloomberg is able to meet expenses. And then some.

He's keeping a very high profile for someone who "doesn't foresee" a presidential run.

Things could get interesting.

5. Yes, I fear a nexus of Buffet, Bill Gates and Bloomberg to mount an
IND run. These guys could self finance a nation campaign out of petty cash.

6. They could, yes. That's a lot of bucks on the kitty, too.
They must be looking at the GOP field and saying to themselves, "Geez, this is really pathetic. We could do better than that."

11. I take your point. I don't hate Bloomberg but I wanted Mark Green
to beat him for NYC Mayor. I still like Green. I'd like a Democrat at the helm in the big city there.

Funding is not going to be a problem for these guys. That's the part that makes me nervous.

9. I'd love it if a GOPer ran 3rd party to split the GOP vote--would have to be
a conservative for that to work to our advantage, though.

10. Yes. Maybe one of the frontrunning 3 or 4 will upset the Far Right
so much that they'll run Brownback as a drain on the GOP vote.

That would be great.

13. I'm so convinced that 2008 is going to be a Democratic year -- even
bigger than 2006, I mean -- that I find myself resenting that Bloomberg et al could assemble a presidential campaign as late as post-Feb 5 and still be competitive.

I like the old farm system in baseball rather than the free agent system. I don't like it when George Steinbrenner buys a star athlete to pack his Yankees. I like it when a kid grows up in little league, plays in high school, then college, and then moves into the farm system of a major league club.

I don't want grassroots politics usurped by big bucks candidates like that, and I want a Democratic in the White House to appoint the next Supreme Court vacancy.
