Feingold writes CNN's John Roberts who said his bill would cut off funding to troops in the field
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/4/18/14117/2830

Via Atrios, Russ Feingold writes to John Roberts (the CNN one, not the SCOTUS one):

I write to express my concern about your comments during CNN's Late Edition on April 15th. During the broadcast, you falsely implied that the Feingold-Reid Iraq redeployment bill would "cut off the funds in the middle of a war" for "troops in the field." While I certainly respect differences of opinion in the debate about the war, I strongly object to this mischaracterization of our effort. Our legislation forces the safe redeployment of troops by March 31, 2008, by prohibiting funds for continued military operations after that date, with a few narrow exceptions. Troops in the field would continue to get their salaries, food, ammunition, weapons, and other supplies as they currently do. You went on to suggest that such an approach has "never happened before." In fact, this is precisely the step Congress took in 1993 to end military operations in Somalia.

Here's a pdf of the entire letter.

6. Urge your Senator to support Feingold's bill via the link below!
To urge your Senator to support Feingold's bill: http://ga1.org/campaign/iraq0407

Co-Sponsor the Feingold Reid 'Power of the Purse' Bill to Safely Redeploy our Troops from Iraq

After four years of the one nation foreign policy of this administration, it is time for Congress to use its constitutional 'power of the purse' authority to safely redeploy our troops from Iraq. To that end, Senator Feingold and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will introduce legislation that would end funding for the war and force the President to safely redeploy troops from Iraq by March 31, 2008. Please sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of this legislation if you agree that we need Congress to act, and safely redeploy our troops out of Iraq.

Full Petition Text:

I believe that a target date for redeploying our troops from Iraq is vital in our efforts to combat terrorism abroad. As the President has shown no indication that he would consider a timetable, Congress must use its 'power of the purse' to fix this dire situation immediately. I support the Feingold-Reid legislation to redeploy U.S. troops out of Iraq by ending further funding for the war after March 31, 2008.

Signed by:

3. I was hoping John Roberts wouldn't turn out to be another "Loyal Bushie"
in the media, but I fear he's just as bad as the rest of them.

I absolutely LOVE Russ Feingold. What a brilliant man. We need many, many more like him. He knows how to make his point, he has guts, and he does what he believes is right, even if he's the only one in the room who feels that way.

He won't allow others to compromise him.

You go, Russ! And thank God you're a Democrat!! We need a bunch more just like you!!!

4. I had hopes for John Roberts way back...but he's gone the way of David Gregory
and while Gregory looks tormented lately...Roberts always has a smirk on his face and a twinkle of evil in his eye as he "reports."

12. Leaving CBS, John Roberts Brings Biased Past to CNN
Leaving CBS, John Roberts Brings Biased Past to CNN
Posted by Rich Noyes on February 1, 2006 - 14:06.

Once assumed to be the likely successor to Dan Rather, White House correspondent John Roberts is leaving CBS to become CNN's "senior national correspondent" starting February 20.

At CBS, Roberts defined himself as part of that network's liberal spin machine -- castigating conservatives, adoring liberals -- highlights of which are documented in this 2004 Media Reality Check (obviously written before CBS became infatuated with Katie Couric). One of the best quotes came when Roberts was filling in for Rather on the CBS Evening News back on May 30, 1994, when he offered this ridiculously sensationalized take on "lethal" golf courses:

"With the Memorial Day weekend, you've been hearing plenty of stories about summertime health hazards to watch out for in the weeks ahead. Some of those hazards, though, may be less obvious than others. For example, a day at the golf course. There's fun, sun, exercise, and nature -- and just maybe, a toxic cocktail right under your nose. If you took all the golf courses in all the land and put them together they would equal the size of Delaware and Rhode Island. But the chemicals needed to tend those 3000 square miles of grass are raising fears the links may be lethal."

21. No kidding - Roberts is just like 90% of the talking heads - paid propagandists.
At CNN he serves up the preferred storylines for House of Saud - House of Bush.

10. Russ also trumped him on two other matters: see here

You also stated that Senator Reid's cosponsorship of my legislation to end the war was "a real mistake," and that
you had spoken to a lot of other Democrats who believed "Harry Reid overstepped himself, that he should have
been more measured." While Washington insiders may be nervous about the prospect of ending funding for a
war that continues with no end in sight, Senator Reid recognizes that Congress has a responsibility to take this
safe and appropriate step, as do the eight cosponsors of our bill and the countless Americans who are calling for
an end to this war.
Finally, you also characterized our effort to end the war in Iraq as a "petty fight on the part of
Democrats." Public opinion polls consistently show that Americans strongly disapprove of the President's
handling ofIraq and want a timetable of when we can bring the war to an end. It isn't "petty" for Congress to
acknowledge the will of the American people by proposing such a timetable.
As Americans continue to closely follow the debate about the war in Iraq, I think we can agree it is critical to
ensure they are receiving accurate and comprehensive analysis. Please let me know if I can provide you with any
further information about the Feingold-Reid bill, and I look forward to your coverage of this issue as you take
over the anchor chair on CNN's American Morning.
