Democratic Senator Makes Progress On Medical Recovery
Democratic Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota, who suffered a brain hemorrhage in December 2006, continues to make progress in his recovery and on his return to the United States Senate.

"I want to thank the people of South Dakota and all of our dear friends for their support and prayers," said Senator Johnson, in a statement released Tuesday. "This has been an unexpected journey and there is a long road in front of me. I am determined and focused on my recovery, and I look forward to returning to the Senate on behalf of South Dakota."

Johnson moved from George Washington University Hospital to a private rehabilitation facility last month to continue his recovery, which is focused on physical, occupational and speech therapy.

The South Dakota Senator's doctors say that Johnson continues to make encouraging and steady progress.

"Senator Johnson is making significant and regular gains. He is doing very well cognitively. We are focusing on standing and balance training as the foundation upon which to base the course of his ongoing physical recovery," said Johnson's attending physician.

Johnson's absence from the Senate has left the Democratic caucus with a slim 50-49 majority.
