Yoko Ono Waives Lennon's Entire Catalogue Rights for Darfur Charity Record

Yoko Ono Waives Publishing Rights To Lennon Charity Album

Yoko Ono Yoko Ono has donated the publishing royalties to the entire John Lennon back catalogue in an effort to make sure a new all-star tribute to her husband is a true charity event.

R.E.M, Christina Aguilera and Green Day are among the acts who have recorded Lennon classics for new covers album Instant Karma: The Campaign To Save Darfur.

The disc is part of Amnesty International's Global Music Activism Project Make Some Noise, which will benefit relief work in Darfur, Sudan.

The album hits stores in June, but R.E.M's version of #9 Dream has been released as a single today.

Ono admits she was thrilled to be able to help the struggling refugees in Darfur and didn't hesitate to waive publishing rights for the cause.

She says, "It's wonderful that, through this campaign, music that is so familiar to many people of my era will now be embraced by a whole new generation.

"John's music set out to inspire change, and in standing up for human rights, we really can make the world a better place."

2. I'm not a big fan of Ono....
but this was damned nice of her. John would have wanted it this way and it will be a positive step in the gigantic effort it's going to take to turn the situation in Darfur around. :applause: to Yoko!

18. You might soften up quite a bit on Yoko Ono...
Check out the "Book of Instructions and Drawings" called Grapefruit. It is amazing.

Also, there is an incredible exhibit at the Berkeley Museum of Art, that really can open some eyes about just how great an artist and humanitarian Yoko was long before we saw her in the headlines with John.

20. I agree completely
My wife is an artist and knew of Ono's work from well before she met John.

I even saw an exhibition of hers at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto (the AGO).

Nowhere was there a mention of John Lennon.

She was an artist in her own right.

8. Yoko Ono is aging well....
She has always used her celebrity status to advance the causes she shared with John. I have always had enormous respect for her, even though she can't sing a lick.

10. listen to "walking on thin ice"
before you dismiss her. last song lennon worked on - i've had the single since 1981.

she's difficult to appreciate, but she's influence a lot of new wave singers. if she sang in japanese, it would be easier to listen to.

11. A cool Yoko Ono quote
I regret that I don't remember where I found this one, but it's still quite nice:

“Remember, each one of us has the power to change the world. Just start thinking peace, and the message will spread quicker than you think.”

12. I have to admit, my fave is Angelina Jolie.. she is 'one' of a kind..
saw pix of her yesterday from her recent trip to Dafur.
She is an incredible human being just plodding along, doing her thing, helping the helpless and forgotten.

The fact that Yoko is helping Dafur's people in their plight speaks well of Clooney's and Jolie's efforts to get the word out. These people are in dire need of sustenance and the chance for a real live.

15. If you really look at her, Yoko was never the witch that Beatles mythologists made her out to be.
When I read a few Beatles bios, I thought she was a pretty cool woman-and I didnt really get why people hated her so much... I think John was ready to leave the Beatles and do something new one way or the other...

GO YOKO! CLASSY MOVE!!

22. I never understood why fans of John Lennon had so little respect for him
that they would blame her for his decisions. He left the Beatles to be with her because he wanted to leave the Beatles and be with her. People should give him some credit for knowing his own mind and running his own life.

19. Good for Yoko.
Recently I had a thread here at the DU championing Yoko: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=304527

I was pleased to see that the great majority of posts were positive toward her.

There were a few hateful and, yes mean, posts, but I was heartened to see that here at the DU there is a warm affection for her.

Yoko was/is an extremely interesting and important artist in her own right before and apart from John. His latching on to her made me respect him more.

26. WOW!! I'm just blown away!
That is so generous - and by far the best move by any celebrity yet to help Darfur. I'm so impressed I don't even know what to say. Except that I'll be first in line to buy a copy or two!
